Chapter 3: Buried Secrets

Chapter 3: Buried Secrets

The confidential file remained open on David Carter's desk long after everyone else had left the conference room.
Outside the window, the city glowed beneath the evening sky, its lights twinkling with an illusion of peace. Inside, however, David felt only a growing sense of unease.
The handwritten note from three years earlier refused to leave his mind.
"Patient appeared frightened..."
"Companion answered every question..."
He had known Khloe since the day she was born. She had always been honest, compassionate, and remarkably resilient. If she had stayed silent back then, there had been a reason.
A reason she had carried alone.
David picked up his phone.
"I need every medical record connected to Khloe Thorne's previous pregnancy," he told his assistant. "And I want copies of every visitor log from that hospital stay."
"Tonight?"
"Tonight."
Marcus remained beside Khloe's bed as she slept.
The doctors had administered medication to reduce contractions, and for the first time in nearly twenty-four hours, she seemed peaceful.
He gently brushed a strand of hair away from her face.
"I'm so sorry," he whispered.
His apology was not only for what had happened the night before.
It was for every moment he had dismissed her concerns.
Every time she had said Isabella's behavior made her uncomfortable.
Every time he had believed it was merely old rivalry or jealousy.
Now he understood.
Khloe had never been trying to win an argument.
She had been trying to survive.
A soft knock interrupted the silence.
Detective Laura Bennett stepped into the room.
"Mr. Thorne."
Marcus quietly closed the door behind them.
"What is it?"
"The district attorney has reviewed the preliminary evidence."
"And?"
"We're preparing felony assault charges."
Marcus exhaled slowly.
"But..."
"There is another development."
She handed him a thin folder.
"It appears this may not be an isolated incident."
Marcus opened it.
The first page contained medical records from three years earlier.
His heart stopped.
He remembered that pregnancy.
They had lost the baby at fourteen weeks.
Doctors had called it a tragic miscarriage.
No one had questioned the explanation.
Until now.
The report described bruising inconsistent with a simple fall.
There were photographs Marcus had never seen.
Dark marks along Khloe's ribs.
Defensive bruises on her forearms.
And one sentence highlighted in yellow.
"Patient repeatedly attempted to answer independently but was interrupted by accompanying visitor."
Marcus looked up.
"Isabella."
Detective Bennett nodded.
"She signed in as Khloe's emergency contact that day."
Marcus's face hardened.
"Khloe never told me."
"Perhaps she thought no one would believe her."
When Khloe awoke later that evening, Marcus sat quietly holding the old medical file.
She recognized it immediately.
Color drained from her face.
"Where did you get that?"
"David found it."
She closed her eyes.
"I hoped it was gone."
Marcus moved closer.
"Tell me what happened."
For several long moments, she said nothing.
Then, with trembling hands, she began.
"It was after one of your family's charity events," Khloe said softly.
"You had flown to Singapore for business."
Marcus remembered.
He had been away for nearly two weeks.
"Isabella offered to drive me home."
Khloe stared at the blanket covering her lap.
"I didn't want to accept."
"But she insisted."
Rain had poured that evening.
Traffic crawled through downtown streets.
At first, Isabella had been perfectly pleasant.
Then, without warning, everything changed.
"She asked if I loved you."
Khloe had smiled.
"I said yes."
"And then?"
Khloe swallowed.
"She laughed."
Marcus frowned.
"Laughed?"
"She said people like me didn't belong in your world."
Khloe's voice grew quieter.
"She told me I was temporary."
The words still echoed in her memory.
"Marcus deserves someone stronger."
"Someone from the right family."
"You won't be here forever."
Khloe had demanded Isabella stop the car.
Instead...
She accelerated.
When they finally arrived at Marcus and Khloe's home, the argument continued in the driveway.
Khloe had tried walking away.
Isabella grabbed her arm.
Hard.
She lost her balance on the wet stone steps.
Fell forward.
Her abdomen struck the edge of the garden wall.
Marcus closed the file.
His breathing became uneven.
"You told everyone you slipped."
Khloe nodded.
"I was afraid."
"Afraid of Isabella?"
She shook her head.
"No."
"Then who?"
She looked directly into his eyes.
"I was afraid you would choose her."
The words shattered him.
"I knew your families had known each other for decades," Khloe continued.
"Your parents adored her."
Marcus lowered his head.
"I thought if I accused her without proof..."
She forced herself to continue.
"...you would think I was trying to destroy your friendships."
Marcus could barely speak.
"You should have told me."
"I know."
"I would've believed you."
Khloe's eyes filled with tears.
"I wanted to believe that too."
Neither of them noticed David standing just outside the room.
He had heard enough.
His heart ached for both of them.
How much suffering could have been prevented if fear had not silenced the truth?
Meanwhile...
Across town...
Antonio Rossi entered his daughter's penthouse without knocking.
Isabella looked up from the dining table.
"P—Papa..."
He threw a newspaper onto the table.
The front-page headline filled the room.
SOCIALITE UNDER INVESTIGATION AFTER HOSPITAL ASSAULT
He spoke calmly.
Too calmly.
"You lied to me."
"I panicked."
"You told me this was an accident."
"I..."
"You never mentioned another pregnancy."
Isabella froze.
Her father had discovered the old records.
"Answer me."
She looked away.
"I didn't think they still existed."
Antonio stared at her in disbelief.
"What did you do three years ago?"
Silence.
Then...
"I only wanted to scare her."
His expression changed instantly.
"You hurt her before."
"I never meant for her to lose the baby."
Antonio slowly sat down.
For the first time in his life, he felt as though he were looking at a stranger.
Back at the hospital, Detective Bennett received another call from the forensic video lab.
She answered immediately.
"Bennett."
The technician's voice sounded excited.
"The surveillance enhancement is finished."
"And?"
"We recovered additional frames."
"What do they show?"
"A reflection."
She frowned.
"A reflection?"
"The marble wall reflected part of the room."
Bennett's pulse quickened.
"You have audio?"
"No."
"But..."
The technician paused.
"...the reflection clearly shows Isabella pointing at Khloe's stomach before the assault."
Bennett closed her eyes.
Premeditation.
The case had just become significantly stronger.
Marcus stood beside the nursery window later that night, watching newborns sleep peacefully behind the glass.
Soon, his own son would be there.
He silently vowed that his child would never grow up surrounded by lies.
Never wonder whether he was protected.
Never doubt that his parents would fight for him.
Behind him, Khloe quietly approached.
She slipped her hand into his.
Together, they watched the sleeping infants.
For the first time in years, they were no longer carrying secrets between them.
The truth, painful as it was, had begun to heal what silence had nearly destroyed.
But just as hope began to return, David's phone rang once more.
He answered.
Within seconds, his expression darkened.
"What do you mean she's gone?"
A pause.
"How long ago?"
Another pause.
He looked toward Marcus.
"The police arrived at Isabella Rossi's penthouse with an arrest warrant..."
He stopped, listening carefully.
"...but she disappeared nearly two hours earlier."
The line went silent.
David slowly lowered the phone.
No luggage.
No passport at the airport.
No private jet filed under her name.
May you like
It was as if Isabella had vanished into thin air.
And somewhere, hidden from the police, she was already making plans that would put Khloe and her unborn child in even greater danger.
