Chapter 4: The Hunt

Chapter 4: The Hunt

The news spread through the hospital before sunrise.
Isabella Rossi had disappeared.
Detective Laura Bennett stood before a wall of photographs in the Major Crimes Unit, studying a growing timeline of Isabella's movements.
Hospital.
Penthouse.
A private parking garage.
Then...
Nothing.
No airport surveillance.
No train station footage.
No credit card transactions.
No passport scans.
It was as if she had stepped off the face of the earth.
"Someone is helping her," Bennett said quietly.
One of the investigators nodded.
"The question is who."
Marcus refused to leave Khloe's side.
Although the doctors were optimistic, they insisted she remain hospitalized under constant observation. Stress alone could trigger premature labor, and after the assault, they weren't willing to take any chances.
Khloe looked out the window toward the city below.
"Do you think she'll come back?"
Marcus answered without hesitation.
"Yes."
She looked at him.
"You sound certain."
"I know Isabella."
He sighed heavily.
"She doesn't run because she's afraid."
"Then why?"
"Because she's planning."
The thought sent a chill through the room.
Meanwhile, forty miles outside the city, a black SUV pulled into an isolated lakeside estate owned by one of the Rossi family's shell companies.
The caretaker opened the iron gates without asking questions.
Isabella stepped out wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap.
Her designer wardrobe had been replaced by plain jeans and a gray sweatshirt.
For the first time in years, no cameras followed her.
No admirers greeted her.
No assistants hovered nearby.
She hated every second of it.
Inside the estate, a man waited in the study.
Victor Salazar.
For over twenty years, he had quietly handled the Rossi family's most delicate legal and financial crises.
He looked at Isabella with visible disappointment.
"You should have surrendered."
"They'll destroy me."
"They already are."
She slammed her purse onto the desk.
"I won't spend my life in prison because of her."
Victor remained calm.
"The evidence is overwhelming."
"There has to be something."
"There may be."
She leaned forward eagerly.
"What?"
"If Khloe changes her statement."
Back at the hospital, David Carter convened a private meeting with hospital security.
"No unauthorized visitors."
"Yes, sir."
"Double the officers outside Khloe's room."
"It has already been done."
"What about the maternity floor entrances?"
"Restricted access only."
David nodded.
"Good."
Then he added one final instruction.
"I don't care who they are."
He looked each officer in the eye.
"If anyone claims to represent the Rossi family..."
He paused.
"They do not get inside."
Across town, Rachel Monroe continued investigating the case.
Something still bothered her.
The attack itself made headlines, but the anonymous source who had leaked the footage had included something else.
A note.
Only one sentence.
This wasn't the first baby.
Rachel stared at the words.
Could that possibly be true?
She began digging through archived court filings, charity records, and hospital reports.
An hour later, she found an old newspaper article.
Three years earlier.
"Businessman Marcus Thorne and wife suffer tragic pregnancy loss."
It had received almost no media attention.
Rachel leaned back slowly.
Coincidence?
Or something much darker?
Inside the police headquarters, forensic specialists completed their enhancement of the surveillance footage.
Detective Bennett watched the newly stabilized video frame by frame.
The enhanced reflection revealed details previously invisible.
Isabella's lips.
Though there was no sound, experts specializing in forensic lip-reading began examining the recording.
One analyst finally spoke.
"We can't certify every word."
"But?"
"There are several phrases we're confident about."
He pointed toward the screen.
"Here..."
Frame by frame.
Isabella faced Khloe.
Her mouth formed unmistakable words.
"You already stole one future."
Another sequence.
"This baby changes everything."
Then—
"I won't let that happen."
The room fell silent.
Detective Bennett looked around.
"If the court accepts this..."
One prosecutor finished her sentence.
"It supports intent."
Marcus sat beside Khloe that evening as they watched the sunset.
For the first time since the attack, they talked about their son instead of Isabella.
"What should we name him?" Marcus asked softly.
Khloe smiled.
"We were supposed to decide together."
"We still can."
She rested his hand against her belly.
The baby kicked almost immediately.
Marcus laughed.
"I think he approves."
Khloe's eyes sparkled.
"What about Ethan?"
Marcus smiled.
"Ethan James Thorne."
She repeated it quietly.
"It suits him."
For a brief moment, they were simply parents.
Not victims.
Not witnesses.
Just two people dreaming about the child they loved.
That peace lasted less than ten minutes.
A nurse hurried into the room.
"Mr. Thorne."
Marcus stood instantly.
"What happened?"
"There is a woman downstairs demanding to see Mrs. Thorne."
David, who had been reviewing paperwork nearby, looked up sharply.
"Who?"
The nurse hesitated.
"She says she's Isabella Rossi's mother."
Twenty minutes later, Sofia Rossi sat across from Marcus and David in a private consultation room.
She looked exhausted.
Unlike her daughter, she wore no expensive jewelry.
No designer handbag.
Only a plain navy coat.
"I know why you're angry."
Marcus folded his arms.
"Do you?"
She nodded slowly.
"My daughter committed an unforgivable act."
David watched her carefully.
"Why are you here?"
She opened her purse and removed a sealed envelope.
"I came to stop something even worse."
Marcus frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Sofia pushed the envelope across the table.
"I found this hidden in Isabella's study."
David carefully opened it.
Inside were printed photographs.
Khloe.
Leaving charity events.
Shopping.
Walking in the park.
Entering prenatal appointments.
Each photograph had dates.
Locations.
Times.
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
Someone had been following his wife.
For months.
Beneath the photographs lay a handwritten page.
The final line froze everyone in the room.
If Marcus won't leave her willingly... he'll have no choice after the baby is gone.
Marcus's hands began to shake.
David immediately called Detective Bennett.
"This just became attempted murder."
Meanwhile, Isabella watched the evening news from the lakeside estate.
Every channel carried the same story.
Every headline used the same photograph.
Her photograph.
She muted the television.
Victor entered quietly.
"The police searched another property."
"They won't find me."
"No."
He paused.
"But they found the surveillance team."
Isabella turned slowly.
"What?"
"The private investigators you hired to follow Khloe."
Her face lost all color.
"They've agreed to cooperate."
Victor looked at her gravely.
"They're telling detectives everything."
Outside, thunder rolled across the dark lake.
For the first time since fleeing, Isabella realized the walls were closing in from every direction.
And hundreds of miles away, another person—someone no one had yet connected to the case—opened an old safety deposit box containing a thick bundle of letters addressed to Marcus Thorne.
Every envelope bore the same handwriting.
May you like
Every one had been mailed years earlier.
None of them had ever reached him.
