Chapter 5: The Letters That Never Arrived

Chapter 5: The Letters That Never Arrived

Rain fell steadily over the city as Detective Laura Bennett stepped into the evidence room, where the sealed envelope from Sofia Rossi had already been cataloged.
The photographs alone were enough to strengthen the prosecution's case.
But it was the handwritten note that haunted everyone involved.
"If Marcus won't leave her willingly... he'll have no choice after the baby is gone."
Those words transformed the investigation.
This was no longer viewed as a crime of passion.
It looked increasingly like a carefully nurtured obsession.
Across town, Marcus refused to leave the hospital despite repeated encouragement from his staff.
His company could wait.
Board meetings could wait.
Nothing mattered except Khloe and their unborn son.
He stood beside the hospital window watching the rain stream down the glass when David entered carrying another file.
"I think we found something."
Marcus turned.
"What now?"
David placed an old wooden box on the table.
"It was delivered anonymously this morning."
Inside were dozens of unopened envelopes.
Every one was addressed to Marcus.
Every one was from Khloe.
Every one had been mailed before they were married.
Marcus frowned.
"I never received these."
David nodded.
"I know."
Marcus picked up the oldest envelope.
The postmark was dated nearly six years earlier.
With trembling fingers, he opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
"Marcus,"
"I don't know why you've stopped answering my calls."
"If I've done something wrong, please tell me."
"I would rather hear the truth than spend every day wondering why you've disappeared."
"No matter what happens, I'll always believe in the future we planned together."
"Love, Khloe."
Marcus lowered the page slowly.
"I never saw this."
"There are more."
He opened another.
Then another.
Each told the same heartbreaking story.
Khloe believed he had abandoned her.
Marcus believed she had stopped loving him.
Neither knew someone had been making sure they never heard from one another.
Khloe awoke as Marcus quietly entered her room carrying the letters.
She recognized the handwriting instantly.
Her eyes widened.
"You found them."
"You wrote all of these?"
She nodded.
"I wrote one every week."
Marcus's voice shook.
"I thought you had chosen to leave me."
Khloe stared at him in disbelief.
"I thought you had chosen Isabella."
Silence settled between them.
Years of misunderstanding unraveled in a matter of moments.
Marcus sat beside her bed.
"I wrote to you too."
"You did?"
"They all came back unopened."
Khloe's heart sank.
Someone had manipulated both of them.
Deliberately.
Patiently.
Cruelly.
Detective Bennett soon confirmed what they had begun to suspect.
The envelopes had all passed through a private mail service once partially owned by a Rossi family holding company.
Several former employees had already agreed to cooperate with investigators.
One admitted under oath that certain letters had been intercepted "upon special request."
No names were recorded.
But the timing was impossible to ignore.
Someone had engineered years of silence between Marcus and Khloe.
Meanwhile, at the lakeside estate, Isabella watched events unravel with growing desperation.
Victor entered carrying his laptop.
"You need to see this."
She looked at the screen.
A news broadcast.
Rachel Monroe was reporting live.
"Investigators are now examining evidence suggesting that communications between Marcus Thorne and Khloe Thorne were intentionally intercepted years before their marriage. Authorities have declined to identify suspects, but sources describe the development as 'deeply significant' to the ongoing criminal investigation."
Isabella slammed the laptop shut.
"They can't prove anything."
Victor remained silent.
"They don't have witnesses."
Still silent.
She looked at him.
"What?"
"They do."
Earlier that afternoon, one of the former employees from the mail service had met privately with detectives.
He produced a worn leather appointment book.
Inside were detailed records of unusual requests.
One page carried a familiar signature.
I. Rossi.
Beside it appeared a simple instruction.
"Hold all correspondence between M.T. and K.C. until further notice."
Detective Bennett stared at the page.
"This changes everything."
The employee nodded.
"I always knew it was wrong."
"Why come forward now?"
He looked toward the television in the corner of the interview room, where footage of Khloe leaving the operating suite played silently.
"When I saw what happened to that pregnant woman..."
His voice broke.
"...I realized my silence had helped create it."
That evening, Antonio Rossi arrived unexpectedly at the hospital.
Marcus agreed to meet him only because David insisted two detectives remain present.
Antonio looked older than he had only days before.
The confident billionaire seemed weighed down by something far heavier than financial loss.
He placed a leather folder on the table.
"I've terminated every trust connected to Isabella."
Marcus said nothing.
"I've instructed my attorneys to cooperate fully."
Still silence.
Antonio took a slow breath.
"There is no excuse for what my daughter has done."
Marcus finally spoke.
"Why are you telling me this?"
"Because I spent too many years confusing loyalty with love."
He looked down at his hands.
"I kept rescuing her from the consequences of her choices."
He closed the folder.
"I won't do it again."
For the first time, Marcus believed him.
Late that night, Khloe suddenly gasped.
A sharp pain spread across her abdomen.
The fetal monitor sounded an alarm.
Nurses rushed into the room.
Dr. Emily Lawson arrived seconds later.
"Contractions."
Marcus felt the blood drain from his face.
"Is it time?"
"Not yet."
The doctor examined Khloe carefully.
"We're going to stop the labor if we can."
Medication was administered immediately.
Everyone waited.
Minutes felt like hours.
Finally, the contractions slowed.
Dr. Lawson smiled with cautious relief.
"He's staying put."
Marcus rested his forehead against Khloe's hand.
"You're both incredible."
Khloe smiled weakly.
"Our little boy is stubborn."
"Just like his mother."
For the first time in days, they laughed.
Miles away, Isabella stood alone on the dock outside the estate.
The lake was perfectly still.
Her reflection stared back at her from the dark water.
Her phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
She answered cautiously.
"Hello?"
A calm male voice replied.
"They've found the letters."
"I know."
"They're coming for you."
"I won't be arrested."
The man sighed.
"You still don't understand."
She frowned.
"What?"
"They aren't investigating only the assault anymore."
A long pause followed.
Then he spoke the words that finally shattered what remained of her confidence.
"They've reopened the miscarriage investigation."
The call disconnected.
For several seconds, Isabella couldn't move.
Then she slowly looked toward the distant highway.
Police sirens echoed faintly across the hills.
Whether they were coming for her or not, she couldn't tell.
But she suddenly realized something far more frightening.
May you like
The truth she had buried for years was no longer buried.
And somewhere in the city, a forensic specialist had just completed DNA testing on a small blood sample recovered from the sleeve of Marcus's tuxedo—a result that would answer the last remaining question about the attack and ensure that, this time, justice could not be escaped.
