Chapter 1 - The Sanctuary of Glass

The black SUV smoothly navigated the winding lanes of an exclusive estate tucked away in Lake Forest. Towering iron gates opened silently, welcoming us into a world that felt entirely removed from the chaos of St. Matthew’s Church. The mansion loomed ahead—a monolith of dark stone and sharp glass overlooking the restless, slate-gray expanse of Lake Michigan.
When the vehicle pulled to a halt, Aleandro did not immediately move. He turned his head, his dark eyes observing the tense set of my shoulders and the way my fingers clutched at the heavy silk of my wedding dress.
"Welcome to my home, Julia," he said, his voice a low, grounding rumble. "You can breathe now. Dario cannot reach you here."
"He thinks he owns me," I whispered, the weight of the morning’s legal ceremony pressing down on my chest like a lead weight. "We signed the civil papers at eight this morning. By law, I am Julia Dragna."
Aleandro’s lips curved into a cold, dangerous smile. "A piece of paper signed under duress is nothing but fuel for a fire. Let him play with his legalities. In the real world, possession is ten-tenths of the law."
He stepped out of the vehicle and held the door open for me. As I stepped onto the gravel driveway, the crisp October wind caught my veil, tugging at the pins that held it in place. With a sudden movement of his hand, Aleandro reached up and pulled the lace free from my hair. He didn't tear it; his fingers were surprisingly deft as he untangled the fabric and let the wind carry it away into the dark waters of the lake.
"You look less like a captive now," he murmured, gesturing for me to enter the house.
The interior of the mansion was a stark contrast to the traditional, suffocating opulence of Dario’s estate. It was modern, minimal, and filled with natural light from floor-to-ceiling windows. There were no heavy velvet drapes or gold-leaf moldings. It felt clean. It felt like a place where secrets could be buried deeply.
Aleandro led me to a spacious sitting room where a fire was already crackling in a massive limestone hearth. He poured two glasses of amber liquid from a crystal decanter and handed one to me. I took it, my hands still shaking slightly, the diamond ring on my finger catching the firelight.
"Drink," he commanded gently. "It will stop the shivering."
I took a sip. The liquid burned its way down my throat, spreading a sudden, desperate warmth through my chest. "Why did you do it, Aleandro? Why risk a full-scale war with the Dragna family for a debt-collector's daughter?"
Aleandro walked over to the window, his hands folded behind his back. He looked out at the churning lake, his broad shoulders casting a long shadow across the room. "Dario Dragna has been expanding his territory into my sectors for eighteen months. He thought he could use your father’s debt to secure the northern shipping lanes through the Voss properties. If he married you, he gained legal control over the docks your father mortgaged to him."
"So I was just a strategic asset," I said, a bitter laugh escaping my lips. "A piece of territory to be conquered."
"To Dario, yes," Aleandro turned, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my breath hitch. "But I don't like Dario taking things that shouldn't belong to him. And when I saw your face in that church, Julia... I realized he hadn't just stolen a piece of land. He was trying to erase a person."
He walked back over to me, stopping just inches away. The scent of woodsmoke, expensive leather, and cold rain clung to him. Slowly, he looked down at my hands, noticing for the first time the untouched perfection of my posture, the guarded way I held myself.
He leaned down, his voice dropping to a whisper that seemed to echo in the quiet room. "Tell me something, Julia. Dario is a man who takes what he wants immediately. Yet, when my men monitored his movements over the last month, he never stayed the night at your father’s house. He treated you like a prize to be displayed, not a woman to be touched."
I felt the blood rush to my cheeks, a sudden heat blooming under my skin. "Dario... Dario wanted everything perfect for the public image. He said a Dragna bride should be untouched until the wedding night. He wanted to parade me in front of the families before he... before he broke me."
Aleandro froze. His entire body went rigid, his eyes narrowing into sharp slits of dark flint. He stared at me, his gaze dropping to the pristine lace of my bodice, then back up to my face.
"So..." he whispered, the words vibrating with a strange, sudden tension. "You're still a virgin?"
I should have hated him for asking. I should have turned around and slapped him for bringing my intimacy into his cold calculations. But as I looked at his face, I didn't see the cruel amusement I expected.
May you like
I saw a man who had suddenly realized he was holding something far more valuable, and far more fragile, than he had ever bargained for.
"Yes," I whispered back, my voice steady despite the racing of my heart. "He never earned the right to ask."
