Chapter 4 - The Whispers of the Lake

The drive back to Lake Forest was silent, but it wasn't the tense, terrified silence of the previous day. It was a shared, quiet understanding. We had stepped into the lions' den together and walked out unscathed.
When we arrived back at the mansion, Aleandro didn't go to his office. He followed me out onto the massive stone terrace that overlooked the lake. The night air was freezing, the wind throwing small sprays of water up from the shore. I shivered, wrapping my arms around myself.
Before I could turn to go inside, Aleandro stepped up behind me, draping his heavy wool overcoat around my shoulders. The coat was warm, filled with his scent, completely enveloping me.
"You were perfect tonight, Julia," he said quietly, standing close enough that I could feel the heat of his body against my back. "Most men would have broken under Dario’s stare in that room. You stood your ground."
"I had nothing left to lose," I said, looking out at the dark horizon. "Dario had already taken my dignity. My family was already safe. The only thing I had left to protect was my own voice."
"You have a powerful voice," Aleandro murmured. He reached out, his hand gently grasping my shoulder, turning me around slowly so I had to look at him. The moonlight caught the sharp angles of his face, softening the harsh lines of his jaw. "Dario’s words at the end of the meeting... about you being cold. He was trying to hurt you."
"He was trying to remind me of what he thinks I am," I whispered, my heart beginning to thud wildly against my ribs. "A transaction that was never completed."
Aleandro’s thumb moved slowly against the side of my neck, his touch feather-light but sending electric sparks straight down my spine. "He doesn't know anything about you. He looked at a diamond and thought it was glass because he didn't know how to appreciate the light inside it."
His gaze dropped to my lips, his breathing deepening. The proximity was intoxicating. For weeks, Dario had held me at arm's length like an expensive painting he hadn't paid for yet. But Aleandro was looking at me like he wanted to consume me, like he wanted to know every hidden corner of my soul.
"Aleandro," I breathed, my hands automatically rising to rest against his chest, feeling the heavy, steady rhythm of his heart. "You asked me a question yesterday. About being... about Dario never earning the right."
"I remember," he said, his voice a low purr.
"Why does it matter to you?" I asked, looking up into his dark eyes. "In your world, women are usually just pawns. Why do you care if I'm untouched?"
Aleandro’s hand moved up to cup my jaw, his fingers gentle but firm. "Because in my world, Julia, everything is stained. Everything is bought, sold, or broken. When I realized that Dario hadn't touched you, I realized that there was still something pure left in this city. Something that hadn't been ruined by the greed of men like him. And I realized..."
He paused, his eyes darkening with an emotion that looked dangerously like devotion. "I realized that if I am the one who gets to show you what it means to be loved, I have to be a better man than I've ever been before."

Before I could process his words, he leaned down and pressed his lips to mine.
The kiss wasn't a claim of ownership. It wasn't the dry, demanding touch Dario had occasionally forced upon my cheek. It was slow, deep, and filled with a desperate, hidden hunger that mirrored my own. I gasped against his mouth, my fingers tightening in the fabric of his shirt, pulling him closer as the cold wind from the lake swirled around us, igniting a fire that neither of us could put out.
