Chapter 6 - The Shadows of the Docks

The northern docks of Chicago were a desolate wasteland of rusted shipping containers, dark warehouses, and the bitter smell of stagnant river water. At midnight, a thick fog rolled in from Lake Michigan, swallowing the city skyline and leaving us in a world of damp shadows and distant foghorns.
A caravan of dark Mancini vehicles pulled up to the main pier, their headlights cutting through the mist. In the lead armored SUV, I sat in the backseat, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs. Aleandro sat beside me, checking the chamber of his heavy black pistol before tucking it into his jacket.
Across the open concrete pier, three luxury sedans stood waiting. Dario Dragna stood in front of the middle car, a long wool coat over his shoulders, his face illuminated by the harsh white glow of his vehicle's high beams. Next to him, two soldiers held Petra by her arms. Her dress was torn, her hair messy, but she was alive, her eyes wide with terror as she looked toward our vehicles.
Aleandro opened his door and stepped out into the cold night air. I moved toward the tinted window, pressing my hand against the cold glass so Dario could see my silhouette through the illumination of the interior light.
Dario’s eyes locked onto the vehicle, a twisted, triumphant smile appearing on his face. "You brought her, Mancini! I knew you wouldn't risk the cousin’s blood! Send her across the pier, and I'll let this piece of trash go!"
Aleandro stood twenty feet away from him, his hands resting casually inside his pockets. "Let's do the trade properly, Dario. One step at a time. Send the cousin halfway. I'll send Julia halfway."
Dario nodded to his men. They pushed Petra forward. She stumbled over the cracked concrete, walking slowly toward the center of the pier.
Aleandro tapped the side of his radio. "Now. Move in."
Suddenly, the dark shipping containers around the pier seemed to come alive. A dozen laser sights, bright red and deadly, illuminated the chests of Dario’s soldiers. From the foggy perimeter, the sound of heavy boots echoed as Aleandro’s strike team emerged from the shadows, their weapons already raised.
Dario’s smile vanished, his face turning purple with rage. "You setup a trap! Kill the girl!"
Before his soldiers could pull their triggers, a sharp crack echoed through the fog. A sniper from the crane above took out the guard on Petra’s left. The second guard tried to raise his gun, but Aleandro moved with a terrifying, predator-like speed. He drew his weapon and fired two precise shots, hitting the man directly in the chest.
"Petra, run!" I screamed, opening the door of the armored vehicle despite Aleandro’s orders, pulling her inside as she sprinted the remaining distance, collapsing onto the floor of the backseat, sobbing hysterically.
"I've got her! I've got her!" I shouted to Aleandro.
But Dario wasn't going down without a fight. He dove behind his sedan as his remaining men opened fire. The pier erupted into a chaotic, deafening symphony of gunfire, muzzle flashes lighting up the thick fog like structural lightning.
Aleandro dropped to one knee behind a concrete barrier, returning fire with an icy, calm precision. He didn't look back at the vehicle; he trusted his men to secure our retreat.
"Get them out of here!" Aleandro shouted into his radio, gesturing toward our driver.
"No! Aleandro!" I yelled, watching through the rear window as our vehicle began to reverse out of the pier, leaving him behind in the middle of the gunfight. But before the driver could clear the gates, a heavy delivery truck rammed into our side, sending the SUV spinning across the concrete until it crashed into a stack of wooden pallets, the engine dying with a loud hiss of steam.

The driver was knocked unconscious by the airbag. Petra was screaming on the floorboards.
Through the cracked window, I saw the fog part. Dario Dragna was walking toward our damaged vehicle, a bloody pistol in his hand and the smile of a demon on his face.
