Chapter 9 - The Sacrament of the Heart

One year later, the bells of a small, quiet stone chapel in the rolling hills of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, rang out into the bright October afternoon. There were no paparazzi, no armed guards standing behind columns, and no expensive, cold decorations.

Inside the chapel sat only twenty guests—my father, looking healthy and proud in a classic black tuxedo; Petra, standing as my maid of honor in a simple gold dress; and a handful of Aleandro’s closest, most trusted friends and legal associates.

The double doors opened, and the room filled with the warm, melodic notes of a classic acoustic guitar.

I walked down the aisle alone, my head held high. My dress was simple—a vintage-style cream silk slip dress that flowed elegantly around my body, completely free of the suffocating layers of heavy lace Dario had forced upon me. My veil wasn't crooked; it hung perfectly behind my shoulders, catching the golden sunlight that streamed through the clear glass windows.

At the end of the aisle stood Aleandro.

He didn't wear a traditional, stark black mafia suit. He wore a sharp, tailored navy tuxedo, his dark hair combed back naturally, a genuine, breathtaking smile on his face that made him look younger, happier, and entirely at peace. His eyes didn't assess. They didn't calculate. They simply shone with a deep, unshakeable devotion as he watched me walk toward him.

When I reached the altar, he extended his hand.

I placed my hand in his, feeling the familiar, grounding warmth of his skin.

The priest, an old friend of my family who knew the truth of everything we had survived, smiled at us gently. "Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to witness the union of two souls who have walked through the fire and found their peace on the other side. This is not a transaction of law, but a covenant of the heart."

The ceremony was short, beautiful, and completely honest. When it came time for the vows, Aleandro didn't read from a card. He held both of my hands in his, looking directly into my eyes.

"Julia," he said, his voice deep and clear, filling the quiet chapel with an absolute certainty. "A year ago, I pulled you out of a world that tried to define your worth by the debts of other men. But the truth is, you are the one who saved me. You showed me that even in the darkest corners of this life, there is a purity that cannot be bought or broken. I promise to protect your voice, to honor your choices, and to love you with everything I have, every single day for the rest of my life."

Tears of pure happiness spilled down my cheeks as I smiled up at him. "Aleandro, you gave me back my life when I thought it was already over. You looked at me and saw a person worth fighting for, worth changing for. I give you my heart, my trust, and my future, without hesitation and without fear. You are my sanctuary, and you are my home."

He slid a simple, beautiful platinum band onto my finger—a ring that carried no weight, no leverage, and no conditions. Just a promise.

"I now pronounce you husband and wife," the priest declared, his face beaming. "You may kiss the bride."

Aleandro didn't rush. He reached up, his fingers gently brushing the veil away from my face, his hand cupping my jaw with that familiar, tender reverence. He leaned down and pressed his lips to mine, a long, sweet, and profound kiss that echoed with the memories of the terrace, the storms we had faced, and the beautiful, quiet life we had built together.

The guests erupted into a warm, joyous applause as we turned and walked down the aisle hand-in-hand, stepping out through the open stone doors into the bright, crisp autumn sunshine.

The air was fresh, the sky was a brilliant blue, and as Aleandro pulled me close against his side, laughing as my father threw a handful of white rose petals into the air, I knew that the ledger was finally clear. The past was buried in the dark waters of the lake, and ahead of us lay nothing but a clean, unwritten page of a love that had truly been earned.
