Chapter 2: The Hidden Recording

Chapter 2: The Hidden Recording

The ballroom remained sealed long after the bomb technicians declared the explosive device safe.

No one hurried toward the exits anymore.

The earlier arrogance that had filled the room had vanished, replaced by quiet disbelief. Men who controlled billion-dollar corporations stood shoulder to shoulder with politicians and celebrities, all of them staring at the young waitress whose sharp instincts had prevented a massacre.

Olivia Bennett wasn't enjoying the attention.

She stood near the service entrance, her black uniform still spotless despite the chaos. Her hands trembled ever so slightly now that the adrenaline was fading.

She kept replaying one thought.

If the flowers hadn't looked different...

Hundreds of people would already be dead.

Across the ballroom, Ethan Calloway remained beside his mother.

Margaret watched Olivia thoughtfully.

"She's trying to disappear."

Ethan glanced toward the waitress.

Indeed, Olivia had quietly picked up the tray she had dropped earlier and was helping another server gather broken glasses from the floor.

As though nothing extraordinary had happened.

As though she hadn't just saved every life in the building.

Margaret smiled softly.

"Most people would already be calling reporters."

"She's cleaning."

Ethan didn't answer.

Instead, he walked across the ballroom.

The crowd instinctively stepped aside.

Even now, nobody dared block his path.

Olivia looked up as his polished shoes stopped beside her.

"If you're here to thank me again," she said quietly, "you already have."

"I'm not."

She blinked.

"I'm here because I have questions."

She nodded once.

"So do I."

That answer caught him off guard.

Before either could continue, the head of security approached carrying a black evidence case.

"We've recovered everything from the suspect."

Ethan looked toward an empty private conference room beside the ballroom.

"Inside."

Minutes later...

Only five people remained in the room.

Ethan.

Olivia.

Margaret.

Chief of Security Daniel Ross.

And Detective Samuel Ortiz from the Chicago Police Department.

The evidence case sat unopened on the polished oak table.

Daniel unlocked it.

Inside lay several ordinary objects.

A fake catering badge.

A burner phone.

A folding knife.

Several thousand dollars in cash.

The silver coin with the unfamiliar crest.

And a tiny black memory card.

Detective Ortiz frowned.

"That wasn't in his pocket."

Daniel nodded.

"It was hidden inside the heel of his shoe."

Olivia leaned forward.

"Someone wanted to make sure it survived."

Ethan looked at her.

"You noticed that?"

"If it was hidden that carefully..."

"...it was more valuable than anything else he carried."

Daniel inserted the memory card into his laptop.

The screen flickered.

A single video file appeared.

No title.

No timestamp.

Just eight minutes of footage.

He pressed play.

Static filled the screen.

Then the image sharpened.

The camera appeared to be hidden inside a flower arrangement overlooking the ballroom.

The angle captured almost every table.

Detective Ortiz frowned.

"This wasn't recorded by hotel security."

"No."

Olivia's voice was quiet.

"This camera was planted."

The room fell silent.

The recording began nearly an hour before the attempted slap.

Guests laughed.

Champagne flowed.

Musicians played softly in the background.

Nothing unusual.

Then...

A waiter entered the frame.

Not the fake waiter.

A real employee.

He approached Margaret Calloway's wheelchair.

Bent down.

Asked if she needed anything.

Margaret smiled warmly.

He walked away.

Olivia suddenly raised her hand.

"Pause."

Daniel stopped the video.

"What?"

She pointed toward the upper-right corner.

"The mirror."

Everyone looked.

Reflected in the decorative mirror behind Margaret...

A man stood partially hidden behind a marble column.

Watching.

He wasn't speaking.

He wasn't drinking.

He wasn't attending the party.

He was simply watching Margaret.

Daniel zoomed in.

The image became clearer.

Dark suit.

Black gloves.

No visible face.

"He never appears directly," Olivia whispered.

"Only in reflections."

Detective Ortiz stared at her.

"You catch details like that often?"

"My father taught me."

"What did he do?"

"He investigated insurance fraud."

She smiled faintly.

"He said reflections tell the truth because people forget they're there."

Ethan watched her carefully.

She wasn't trying to impress anyone.

She simply noticed things.

The recording continued.

Forty-three minutes passed.

Then Vanessa Hawthorne entered the frame.

She walked directly toward Margaret.

Her expression already irritated.

The hidden man behind the column subtly checked his watch.

Olivia frowned.

"He was waiting."

Daniel nodded slowly.

The timeline accelerated.

Guests gathered closer.

Vanessa raised her voice.

Margaret remained calm.

The argument intensified.

Then...

Exactly four seconds before Vanessa lifted her hand...

The hidden man disappeared.

At that precise moment...

The fake waiter entered through the opposite doors pushing the service cart.

Everything happened simultaneously.

Vanessa attempted the slap.

Olivia intervened.

Every head turned toward them.

Meanwhile...

The service cart rolled unnoticed toward Margaret.

The hidden camera captured the entire distraction perfectly.

Daniel stopped the recording.

"No coincidence."

Detective Ortiz nodded.

"This was coordinated."

Olivia crossed her arms.

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

"It was rehearsed."

Ethan tilted his head.

"Explain."

"The timing."

She replayed the footage.

"Watch Vanessa."

The video slowed.

Vanessa's eyes briefly shifted toward the ballroom clock.

Then...

Toward the entrance.

Only then did she raise her hand.

Olivia pointed.

"She wasn't acting on emotion."

"She was waiting for a signal."

Silence filled the room.

Daniel replayed the scene again.

She was right.

Vanessa hadn't exploded in anger.

She had looked...

Almost as though someone had told her exactly when to start.

Detective Ortiz immediately stood.

"I want her detained."

Ethan calmly raised one hand.

"Not yet."

Ortiz frowned.

"Why?"

"If she was following instructions..."

"...she may lead us to whoever gave them."

Olivia nodded.

"People panic when they think they've succeeded."

"They're more careful when they know they've failed."

Ethan studied her.

"You've done investigations before."

"No."

"You sound like you have."

She hesitated.

"My father solved problems by watching people."

"I just paid attention."

Margaret smiled proudly.

"She's remarkable."

Before anyone could respond, Daniel's phone vibrated violently.

He answered.

His expression darkened almost immediately.

"What?"

The room waited.

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

"The suspect..."

"He escaped."

Detective Ortiz shot to his feet.

"Impossible."

"He was handcuffed."

Daniel nodded grimly.

"So we thought."

Security footage from the underground garage appeared moments later.

Every person crowded around the monitor.

Two guards escorted the suspect through a secured hallway.

Without warning...

The lights went out.

Only three seconds.

Emergency lighting activated.

The guards were unconscious.

The handcuffs remained on the floor.

The suspect...

Gone.

Detective Ortiz slammed his fist against the table.

"Damn it!"

Olivia didn't react.

Instead, she rewound the footage.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Finally...

"There."

Daniel froze the frame.

One emergency light hadn't gone out.

It flickered just enough to illuminate the far wall.

A shadow.

Barely visible.

Not one person.

Two.

Someone had been waiting inside the building long before the power failed.

An accomplice.

Ethan folded his arms.

"So there were at least three."

"The fake waiter."

"The observer."

"And the rescuer."

Olivia slowly shook her head.

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

"There were four."

Daniel frowned.

"What makes you think that?"

She replayed the ballroom recording one final time.

Then paused on Vanessa.

"She wasn't the mastermind."

"No."

"She was another distraction."

The room became silent.

"If the observer watched..."

"The fake waiter pushed the bomb..."

"And someone rescued him..."

"Then someone else had to coordinate the timing."

She looked directly at Ethan.

"The person giving orders..."

"...was never on camera."

For the first time all evening...

Ethan smiled.

Not because anything was funny.

Because someone else had finally reached the same conclusion he already feared.

"The invisible leader."

Olivia nodded.

"Exactly."

At that moment, another officer hurried into the conference room carrying a sealed envelope.

"Mr. Calloway."

"This was delivered five minutes ago."

"No courier."

"No fingerprints."

"It was simply left at the front desk."

Ethan opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

An old photograph.

Nearly twenty-five years old.

It showed Ethan as a twelve-year-old boy standing beside his father outside the original Calloway Steel factory.

Across the image...

Someone had written three words in dark red ink.

WE REMEMBER EVERYTHING.

The room fell deathly silent.

Margaret's face turned pale.

Her hands began to shake uncontrollably.

Ethan stared at the photograph for several long seconds before speaking.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"They're not attacking my family."

Nobody answered.

He slowly looked toward Olivia.

"They're reopening a war..."

"...that never truly ended."

Olivia lowered her eyes to the silver coin lying on the table.

The black crest.

The Latin words.

The hidden recording.

The invisible leader.

None of it felt random anymore.

Whoever had orchestrated today's attack hadn't come for revenge alone.

They had spent decades preparing for this moment.

And if the message was to be believed...

May you like

Tonight's bombing had never been intended as the finale.

It had only been the opening move.
