Chapter 5: The Man Everyone Buried

Chapter 5: The Man Everyone Buried

No one in Vanessa Hawthorne's mansion moved.

The words echoed through the silent study.

"The DNA belongs to... Richard Calloway."

Detective Samuel Ortiz stared at Daniel Ross as if he had misheard him.

"That's impossible."

Daniel looked equally shaken.

"I know."

"The lab repeated the test three times."

"They're ninety-nine-point-nine-nine percent certain."

Margaret slowly lowered herself into a nearby chair.

Her face had lost all color.

"I buried my husband."

"I held his hand before they closed the casket."

"I watched them lower him into the ground."

Tears welled in her eyes.

"I said goodbye."

Olivia remained remarkably calm.

Instead of reacting emotionally, she asked the question no one else had considered.

"Where exactly was the blood found?"

Daniel blinked.

"On the corner of the desk."

"No."

Olivia clarified.

"I mean... where on the desk?"

The forensic technician stepped forward.

"About shoulder height."

Olivia nodded slowly.

"And how old is it?"

The technician looked at his notes.

"Fresh."

"Within the last twenty-four hours."

The room fell silent again.

Ethan folded his arms.

"So either..."

"My father is somehow alive..."

"...or someone is using his DNA."

Olivia looked at the bloodstain once more.

"I think there's a third possibility."

Everyone turned toward her.

"The sample isn't Richard's blood."

Detective Ortiz frowned.

"The lab—"

"I'm not questioning the lab."

Olivia interrupted gently.

"I'm questioning the assumption."

She walked toward the shattered desk.

"If someone had access to Richard Calloway's biological material..."

"...they could place it here intentionally."

Daniel looked confused.

"What biological material?"

Olivia answered quietly.

"Hair."

"Old medical samples."

"Stored tissue."

"Anything preserved."

Margaret suddenly stood.

Her eyes widened.

"The hospital."

Everyone stared.

"What hospital?"

"The night Richard died..."

"...they performed an autopsy."

Detective Ortiz nodded.

"Standard procedure."

Margaret's breathing quickened.

"They kept tissue samples."

"For evidence."

Ethan understood immediately.

"And if someone stole those samples..."

"...they could create exactly this."

The technician slowly nodded.

"She's right."

"Our test only identifies DNA."

"It doesn't tell us when the DNA entered the sample."

For the first time that night...

Hope replaced confusion.

Richard Calloway was almost certainly still dead.

Someone simply wanted them to believe otherwise.

Someone was manipulating every piece of evidence.

The Missing Archive

Back at Calloway House, Ethan immediately ordered Daniel to investigate the hospital.

Within an hour, disturbing news arrived.

The pathology archive had suffered a mysterious fire...

Nineteen years earlier.

Thousands of medical records had been destroyed.

Officially.

But one retired employee remembered something unusual.

Before the fire...

A woman had requested access to Richard Calloway's evidence file.

She had presented government credentials.

No one questioned her.

The records disappeared.

Two days later...

The archive burned.

Detective Ortiz slammed the report onto the table.

"Someone erased everything."

Olivia quietly asked,

"Did anyone verify her credentials?"

"No."

"They were destroyed in the fire too."

Margaret closed her eyes.

"They've been cleaning up behind themselves for decades."

An Unexpected Visitor

Just after midnight...

The security gate buzzed.

Daniel answered.

"Who is it?"

A nervous voice replied.

"I need to speak with Mr. Calloway."

"It's about Umbra Manet."

Daniel immediately reached for his weapon.

Outside the gate stood an elderly man wearing a worn brown coat.

His silver hair was unkempt.

His hands shook slightly.

Security searched him thoroughly.

No weapons.

No phone.

No identification.

Only an old leather notebook.

Ethan agreed to meet him.

The man entered the library slowly, studying every face.

When his eyes landed on Margaret...

He smiled sadly.

"You haven't changed."

Margaret stared at him.

Then gasped.

"Thomas?"

The old man nodded.

"It's been a long time."

Ethan looked between them.

"You know him?"

Margaret whispered,

"He worked with your father."

Thomas Hale sat carefully.

"I was Richard's accountant."

Detective Ortiz immediately leaned forward.

"We've been looking for you."

Thomas laughed bitterly.

"I know."

"I've spent twenty-two years making sure no one found me."

Richard's Last Secret

Thomas placed the leather notebook on the table.

"I promised Richard..."

"...that if Umbra Manet ever returned..."

"...I'd give this to his son."

Ethan opened it carefully.

Every page contained names.

Dates.

Transactions.

Handwritten notes.

Political donations.

Shipping records.

Offshore bank accounts.

It wasn't complete.

But it was enough to expose an enormous financial network.

Olivia slowly turned another page.

Then stopped.

"Wait."

She pointed to one particular entry.

Hawthorne Foundation

Repeated dozens of times.

Large payments.

Always followed by coded initials.

Detective Ortiz frowned.

"So Vanessa's family financed them."

Thomas shook his head.

"Worse."

"They founded them."

Silence filled the room.

Thomas continued.

"The Hawthorne family supplied the money."

"The Moretti family supplied the violence."

"And a third family..."

"...supplied legitimacy."

Ethan looked up.

"What family?"

Thomas hesitated.

His expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

"They're still powerful."

"So are we."

Ethan replied calmly.

Thomas slowly nodded.

"The Ashcrofts."

Margaret closed her eyes.

"Oh no..."

Olivia looked confused.

"Who are they?"

Margaret answered quietly.

"They don't run businesses."

"They own judges."

"They own media companies."

"They own universities."

"They decide who becomes respectable..."

"...and who disappears."

The Attack

A loud explosion shattered the windows.

Glass sprayed across the library.

"Down!"

Daniel tackled Margaret behind a marble fireplace.

Security alarms screamed throughout the estate.

Outside...

Black SUVs crashed through the front gates.

Masked men poured into the property.

Gunfire erupted.

Ethan grabbed Olivia's arm.

"This way!"

They ran through a hidden hallway behind the library.

The secret passage had been built decades earlier by Richard Calloway.

Only the family knew it existed.

Thomas struggled to keep up.

His breathing became heavier.

Daniel spoke urgently into his radio.

"Multiple hostiles!"

"North entrance!"

"Protect Mrs. Calloway!"

The estate had become a battlefield.

The Hidden Room

The secret hallway ended at an underground security room.

Steel doors sealed automatically behind them.

For the first time in several minutes...

Silence.

Everyone caught their breath.

Thomas suddenly collapsed into a chair.

"I'm too old for this."

Despite the danger...

Olivia noticed something strange.

Thomas wasn't exhausted.

He was staring at one wall.

Specifically...

At Richard Calloway's portrait.

She walked toward it.

The painting looked ordinary.

Until she noticed tiny scratches near the frame.

Someone had removed it before.

Recently.

She turned toward Ethan.

"Has this painting always been here?"

He nodded.

"Since I was a teenager."

"Has anyone moved it?"

"No."

Olivia gently pressed one corner.

Nothing.

She tried the opposite side.

A soft click echoed inside the wall.

The portrait swung open.

Behind it...

A hidden safe.

Margaret covered her mouth.

"I never knew..."

Ethan entered the combination almost instinctively.

His father's birthday.

The safe opened.

Inside lay a thick manila envelope.

Across the front...

Written in Richard Calloway's unmistakable handwriting...

FOR ETHAN — ONLY WHEN THE SHADOW RETURNS

No one breathed.

Ethan slowly opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

And beneath it...

A modern USB flash drive.

Daniel frowned.

"A USB?"

Thomas smiled weakly.

"Richard updated the evidence."

Everyone looked at him.

Thomas nodded.

"He didn't stop gathering proof before he died."

"He made copies."

"He trusted technology more than paper."

Olivia looked from the letter to Thomas.

Something wasn't right.

Richard had died twenty-two years ago.

USB drives had existed...

But they weren't common.

Not for ordinary businessmen.

She picked up the flash drive.

It looked...

Brand new.

Almost untouched.

Her eyes narrowed.

"Ethan..."

He looked at her.

"This drive isn't twenty-two years old."

The room froze.

Thomas's smile slowly disappeared.

Olivia turned the drive over in her hand.

The manufacturing logo.

The connector.

The casing.

Everything about it was modern.

Far too modern.

She looked directly into Thomas Hale's eyes.

Her voice was calm.

Measured.

Almost gentle.

"You said Richard gave this to you..."

"...twenty-two years ago."

Thomas didn't answer.

Olivia took one slow step toward him.

"But this model of flash drive..."

"...wasn't released until three years ago."

Silence swallowed the room.

Daniel's hand moved slowly toward his pistol.

Ethan's expression hardened.

Thomas lowered his head.

Then...

For the first time since arriving...

The frightened old accountant smiled.

Not with relief.

Not with kindness.

With satisfaction.

"I was wondering..."

"...how long it would take you."

The room went completely still.

Olivia's instincts had uncovered another deception.

The man who claimed to be Richard Calloway's oldest friend...

Had just been caught in a lie.

And judging by the smile on his face...

May you like

He had never come to ask for protection.

He had come for something hidden inside the Calloway estate.
