Chapter 4: The Voice from the Grave

Chapter 4: The Voice from the Grave
The wind swept across the cemetery, carrying the scent of damp earth and lake water.
No one moved.
The small cassette tape rested in Ethan Calloway's hand like it weighed a hundred pounds.
Margaret stared at it with tears gathering in her eyes.
"I buried that memory twenty-two years ago."
Detective Samuel Ortiz looked between mother and son.
"You've seen this tape before?"
Margaret slowly shook her head.
"No."
"But Richard told me about it."
She swallowed hard.
"The night before he died."
Silence settled over the cemetery.
Ethan's voice remained calm.
"What did he say?"
Margaret looked at the open grave.
"He told me..."
"...that if anything ever happened to him..."
"...there would be proof."
She closed her eyes.
"He said the truth would outlive him."
No one spoke.
Finally, Daniel Ross broke the silence.
"We shouldn't play it here."
Ethan nodded.
"Back to Calloway House."
Forty Minutes Later
The Calloway Estate overlooked Lake Michigan from one of the highest points on the North Shore.
Unlike the extravagant mansions owned by many billionaires, the estate felt restrained.
Elegant.
Timeless.
Its walls displayed family photographs instead of expensive artwork.
Margaret had insisted on that years ago.
She believed people mattered more than possessions.
Tonight, however, the warmth of the home was replaced by tension.
Security officers surrounded the property.
Every entrance was guarded.
Every vehicle entering the grounds was searched.
Inside the private library, Ethan carefully placed the cassette tape onto an antique recorder that hadn't been used in years.
Olivia stood quietly near one of the bookshelves.
She still couldn't believe she was here.
Twelve hours ago she had been serving champagne.
Now she stood inside the home of Chicago's most influential family, about to listen to the voice of a man who had died more than two decades earlier.
Ethan looked around the room.
Only six people remained.
Himself.
Margaret.
Olivia.
Daniel.
Detective Ortiz.
And Ethan's longtime attorney, Harold Simmons.
"No phones."
Everyone placed their phones on the table.
Daniel activated a signal jammer.
The room became completely isolated.
Ethan pressed PLAY.
The tape hissed.
Static filled the room.
Then...
A man's voice emerged.
Calm.
Confident.
Older than Ethan remembered.
Richard Calloway.
"If you're hearing this..."
"...then I'm already dead."
Margaret covered her mouth.
For the first time in twenty-two years...
She heard her husband's voice.
Tears rolled silently down her cheeks.
Richard continued.
"I hope I'm wrong."
"I hope this recording never becomes necessary."
"But if it has..."
"...then someone finally succeeded."
The room was completely still.
"I've spent three years gathering evidence."
"They believe I'm negotiating."
"I'm not."
"They believe I'm afraid."
"I'm not."
"They believe they own this city."
"They don't."
Olivia exchanged a glance with Detective Ortiz.
Richard wasn't speaking like a businessman.
He sounded like a soldier preparing for battle.
Then his tone changed.
"If they kill me..."
"...don't waste your life seeking revenge."
"Seek the truth."
Ethan stared at the recorder without blinking.
"I've hidden copies of everything."
"The names."
"The accounts."
"The judges."
"The politicians."
"The police officers."
"Every person who accepted blood money."
Detective Ortiz slowly sat down.
His breathing had become shallow.
This wasn't merely organized crime.
It was corruption reaching into every level of the city.
Richard continued.
"But understand this..."
"I never discovered who led them."
"I only learned what they call themselves."
He paused.
Then spoke two words.
"Umbra Manet."
Margaret closed her eyes.
The same name.
Again.
Richard's voice grew quieter.
"If you're listening..."
"...they're still alive."
"And if they're still alive..."
"...they're listening too."
The tape suddenly clicked.
Static.
Then...
Another voice.
Not Richard's.
A woman's.
Cold.
Calm.
Almost emotionless.
"You should have accepted our offer."
The room froze.
Richard answered.
"I don't negotiate with murderers."
The woman laughed softly.
"You misunderstand."
"We're not asking."
A loud crash echoed through the recording.
Furniture falling.
Footsteps.
Richard breathing heavily.
Then...
One final sentence.
"If my son survives..."
"...he'll finish what I started."
The tape ended.
Silence.
No one moved for nearly a full minute.
Finally, Harold Simmons spoke.
"That recording changes everything."
Detective Ortiz nodded.
"It proves Richard Calloway was murdered."
"No."
Olivia quietly interrupted.
Everyone looked at her.
"It proves he expected to be murdered."
She stepped closer to the recorder.
"It doesn't identify the killers."
"It doesn't identify the woman."
"It doesn't prove the organization still exists."
Daniel frowned.
"But today's attack—"
"Suggests it."
Olivia corrected.
"Not proves it."
Ethan watched her carefully.
She wasn't emotional.
She wasn't intimidated by powerful people.
She simply separated facts from assumptions.
His father would have admired that.
Margaret smiled faintly.
"So would Richard."
Daniel's radio suddenly crackled.
"Chief."
His expression changed immediately.
"What happened?"
A frightened voice answered.
"We've got a problem."
"What problem?"
"The Hawthorne residence."
Daniel frowned.
"Vanessa?"
"She's gone."
Everyone stood.
The officer continued.
"Her security cameras were disabled."
"The guards are unconscious."
"There's blood inside the house."
"But no body."
Detective Ortiz grabbed his jacket.
"We're going."
One Hour Later
Vanessa Hawthorne's mansion was in complete chaos.
Police lights illuminated the massive estate.
Forensic investigators moved carefully through every room.
The elegant home looked untouched.
Except...
The study.
Books covered the floor.
A shattered wine glass lay beside an overturned chair.
Blood stained the edge of an antique desk.
Detective Ortiz crouched beside it.
"Not much."
"Forensics says whoever was injured probably survived."
Olivia slowly walked through the room.
Her eyes moved from object to object.
She wasn't searching randomly.
She was observing.
The grandfather clock.
The broken lamp.
The open window.
The scattered papers.
Then she stopped.
"Something's missing."
Daniel looked around.
"What?"
"The family photographs."
Everyone frowned.
She pointed toward the walls.
Rectangular patches of clean wallpaper remained where frames had recently hung.
"The hooks are still there."
"They were removed in a hurry."
Detective Ortiz looked confused.
"Why steal photographs?"
Olivia answered quietly.
"Because someone didn't want us seeing who was in them."
Ethan immediately turned toward the lead forensic technician.
"Find every digital backup."
The technician nodded.
"We're already checking cloud storage."
Moments later...
A young officer hurried upstairs carrying an old picture frame.
"Found one."
It had fallen behind a bookshelf.
The glass was cracked.
The photograph inside had faded with age.
Vanessa stood beside her parents at what appeared to be a charity gala twenty years earlier.
Standing behind them...
Almost hidden among the guests...
Was a familiar face.
Margaret gasped.
"No..."
Ethan stared.
The woman in the background wore a simple black evening gown.
Around her neck...
Hung the silver pendant bearing the Umbra Manet crest.
The exact same woman Margaret remembered seeing the night Richard died.
Olivia leaned closer.
"There."
She pointed toward the lower corner of the photograph.
The woman wasn't looking at the camera.
She was looking directly at Vanessa's father.
Smiling.
Not like strangers.
Like partners.
Detective Ortiz slowly exhaled.
"The Hawthorne family..."
"...was connected to Umbra Manet."
Ethan's expression hardened.
"Not connected."
He took the photograph.
"They were inside it."
Before anyone could speak again, Daniel's phone rang.
He answered.
His face drained of color.
"What?"
The room waited.
Daniel looked directly at Ethan.
"The forensic lab just called."
"They tested the blood from Vanessa's study."
Ethan asked quietly,
"And?"
Daniel swallowed.
"It isn't Vanessa's."
Everyone stared.
"Then whose is it?"
Daniel looked down at the report in his trembling hands.
"The DNA belongs to..."
He stopped.
Impossible.
Olivia stepped forward.
"Who?"
Daniel slowly raised his eyes.
"It belongs to someone who officially died..."
"...twenty-two years ago."
The room fell silent.
May you like
Daniel barely managed to finish the sentence.
"Richard Calloway."
