Chapter 3: The Shadow of the Past

Chapter 3: The Shadow of the Past

No one spoke after Ethan's final words.

"They're reopening a war... that never truly ended."

The conference room felt smaller somehow. Outside, the luxurious hotel continued buzzing with police officers, bomb technicians, and anxious guests waiting to give statements. But inside, only silence remained.

Olivia looked at the faded photograph lying on the polished table.

A twelve-year-old Ethan stood beside a broad-shouldered man with kind eyes and a confident smile. The factory behind them was decorated with banners celebrating the grand reopening of Calloway Steel after a devastating recession.

It looked like an ordinary family photograph.

Until you noticed the message written across it.

WE REMEMBER EVERYTHING.

Margaret slowly reached for the picture.

Her fingers trembled so violently that she almost dropped it.

"I thought..." she whispered.

"I thought they were all gone."

Ethan looked at his mother.

"You know who sent this."

It wasn't a question.

Margaret closed her eyes.

"I hoped I'd never have to tell you."

Detective Samuel Ortiz leaned forward.

"Mrs. Calloway, if this has anything to do with today's attack, we need every detail."

She nodded slowly.

"You deserve the truth."

Twenty-Two Years Earlier

Margaret's voice became distant as memories she had buried for decades resurfaced.

"Your father wasn't born rich."

She looked at Ethan.

"You know that much."

He nodded.

Richard Calloway had built his fortune from nothing.

The son of a steelworker.

The grandson of immigrants.

By the age of forty-five, he owned one of the largest industrial companies in the Midwest.

But success had attracted dangerous people.

"There was another family," Margaret continued.

"They didn't build businesses."

"They built empires through fear."

Olivia listened carefully.

"The Moretti family?"

Margaret looked surprised.

"You've heard of them?"

Olivia shook her head.

"No."

"I guessed."

"The name sounded Italian."

Detective Ortiz couldn't help smiling.

"You really do notice everything."

Margaret continued.

"The Morettis controlled unions, shipping ports, illegal gambling, and politicians."

"They wanted Richard to work with them."

"What kind of work?" Ethan asked.

Margaret's expression darkened.

"They wanted his trucks."

"To move weapons."

"And drugs."

The room became silent.

"Your father refused."

"Again."

"And again."

"And then..."

She looked down.

"They killed him."

Ethan had heard the official story his entire life.

Richard Calloway had died in a car accident.

Brake failure.

Rain.

A tragic loss.

But Margaret slowly shook her head.

"It wasn't an accident."

"It never was."

Olivia watched Ethan carefully.

He didn't cry.

He didn't shout.

His face remained completely still.

Only his hands tightened beneath the table.

"So everyone lied."

Margaret nodded.

"I did."

"I was afraid."

"You were twelve."

"I couldn't lose you too."

Detective Ortiz looked stunned.

"Why wasn't this investigated?"

"It was."

Margaret answered bitterly.

"But every witness disappeared."

"Every piece of evidence vanished."

"The police captain resigned."

"The prosecutor withdrew."

"The judge retired."

"Money can erase many things."

Daniel Ross entered the room carrying another tablet.

"Boss."

"We've identified the fake waiter."

Everyone looked up hopefully.

Daniel's face said otherwise.

"The identity was stolen."

"The real owner died three years ago."

Another dead end.

Olivia quietly asked,

"What about facial recognition?"

Daniel sighed.

"No matches."

"No military records."

"No passport."

"No driver's license."

"It's like he never existed."

Olivia frowned.

"Nobody never exists."

Daniel looked at her.

"What?"

"Everyone leaves traces."

"If there are none..."

"...someone removed them."

Ethan slowly nodded.

"Professionals."

Before Daniel could answer, another security officer knocked urgently.

"Sir."

"You should see this."

Minutes later...

Everyone gathered inside the hotel's security control room.

Dozens of surveillance monitors covered one entire wall.

Technicians replayed every second of the evening.

Daniel pointed toward one screen.

"This camera overlooks the east hallway."

The footage began.

Guests entered.

Servers walked past.

Everything looked ordinary.

Then...

Olivia stopped breathing.

"Pause."

The technician froze the frame.

Standing near a decorative pillar...

Was Olivia herself.

Only...

She had never been there.

"What..."

She stepped closer.

The woman wore the exact same waitress uniform.

The same hairstyle.

The same height.

From a distance...

They were almost identical.

Detective Ortiz whispered,

"That's not you."

"No."

Olivia replied quietly.

"But somebody wanted people to think it was."

The mystery deepened.

The impersonator walked calmly through the hallway.

She smiled politely at guests.

Then disappeared into a staff-only corridor.

Daniel fast-forwarded.

She never reappeared.

"She's a decoy."

Olivia said confidently.

Ethan looked at her.

"So there were five."

She nodded.

"The observer."

"The fake waiter."

"The rescuer."

"The coordinator."

"And someone pretending to be me."

Detective Ortiz frowned.

"Why?"

Olivia answered almost immediately.

"So witnesses would remember seeing me somewhere I wasn't."

Daniel slowly understood.

"If the bomb exploded..."

"...everyone would've blamed you."

She nodded.

"I would've been the perfect suspect."

The room became quiet again.

Whoever planned the attack hadn't simply wanted people dead.

They had wanted someone to take the blame.

Someone ordinary.

Someone powerless.

A waitress.

Margaret suddenly gasped.

Her eyes widened as she stared at the frozen image.

"The necklace."

Everyone turned.

"What?"

Margaret pointed toward the fake waitress.

Around her neck hung a tiny silver pendant.

Almost invisible.

Daniel zoomed in.

The image sharpened.

It was the same black crest found on the mysterious silver coin.

Umbra Manet.

The Shadow Remains.

Margaret whispered,

"I've seen that before."

"Where?"

"The night Richard died."

Every head turned toward her.

"There was a woman standing across the street."

"She wore that same pendant."

"I told the detectives."

"They said I imagined it."

Olivia's heart sank.

If Margaret's memory was correct...

The organization behind today's attack had existed for more than two decades.

Patient.

Invisible.

Waiting.

Just then, Ethan's personal phone vibrated.

Only three people in the world possessed that private number.

He answered immediately.

"Yes."

The voice on the other end spoke only six words.

Ethan's expression changed instantly.

"I'll be there."

He ended the call.

"What happened?" Daniel asked.

"My father's grave."

Everyone stared.

"It was broken into."

An hour later...

The Calloway family cemetery overlooked Lake Michigan beneath a cold midnight sky.

Police lights flashed between rows of ancient oak trees.

Officers stood silently around one particular grave.

Richard Calloway.

The marble headstone remained untouched.

The grave itself...

Had been opened.

Fresh earth surrounded the enormous hole.

Margaret covered her mouth.

"Oh, God..."

Ethan walked to the edge.

The coffin remained inside.

Untouched.

Detective Ortiz frowned.

"They didn't steal anything."

Olivia knelt beside the disturbed soil.

Something reflected the flashlight.

She reached carefully into the dirt.

A small metal box.

Locked.

No larger than a jewelry case.

Daniel examined it.

"No explosives."

Ethan took it himself.

The lock opened with a simple click.

Inside...

There was only one object.

An old cassette tape.

Nothing else.

No label.

No note.

Just a strip of masking tape with a handwritten date.

October 14, 2004.

Margaret suddenly staggered backward.

"No..."

Ethan caught her before she fell.

She stared at the tape in horror.

"That's impossible."

"What is it?"

Her voice cracked.

"That's the day..."

"...your father told me he finally had proof."

The wind howled through the cemetery.

Olivia looked from the tape...

...to the open grave...

...then to Ethan.

Whoever had unearthed Richard Calloway's coffin hadn't come to destroy his memory.

They had come looking for something.

Something they believed was buried with him.

And judging by Margaret's terrified face...

That old cassette tape might contain the evidence powerful enough to expose a conspiracy that had remained hidden for twenty-two years.

May you like

Or...

It might contain the secret someone was still willing to kill for.
