Chapter 4 - The Legal Weapon

"He knows," I gasped, my knees giving out. Ethan caught me before I hit the floor, lifting me effortlessly and guiding me to the sofa near the fireplace. "Ethan, Tyler knows where we are. He’s going to come here. He’s going to take the kids!"

"He won't touch them, Maya. I swear to you," Ethan said, his voice hard as steel. He immediately pulled out his own phone and dialed a number. "Marcus, wake up the entire legal team. I want an emergency restraining order filed against Tyler Cross within the hour. Utilize the full video surveillance from Chicago O'Hare—we have footage of him stalking a staff member and physical intimidation. Furthermore, contact the private security detail. I want a double perimeter around the estate starting right now. No one enters or leaves without my personal biometric clearance."

He hung up and turned back to me, taking my cold hands in his. "My security team is comprised of former special forces operatives, Maya. This house is a fortress. Tyler Cross cannot get to you here. But we need to fight him legally to ensure he can never threaten you again."

The next morning, the grand library of the mansion became our war room. Margaret Hale, a sharp, brilliant family law attorney who had worked with Ethan for years, arrived before dawn. Stacks of documents, background checks, and police reports covered the massive mahogany desk.

"We have a significant advantage, Maya," Margaret said, spectacles sliding down her nose as she looked at me. "Tyler Cross has an extensive criminal record—petty theft, domestic disturbance calls from previous relationships, and a history of substance abuse. The fact that he tracked you to the airport and physically intimidated you on camera gives us enough leverage for an immediate, temporary protective order."

"But he's the biological father of Lily and Emma," I said, my voice heavy with anxiety. "Won't the courts give him visitation rights? If he gets them alone, even for a weekend, he’ll use them to torture me."

Ethan, who had been pacing near the large windows, stopped and looked at Margaret. "What about full termination of parental rights? Can we push for that?"

"It’s difficult, but not impossible," Margaret explained. "We need to prove a consistent pattern of abuse and severe financial and emotional neglect. Maya’s testimony will be crucial, but we also need secondary evidence. Medical records, police call logs from your old apartment..."

"I have them," I interrupted quietly. Both Ethan and Margaret looked at me in surprise. "Every time Tyler beat me, every time he locked us in the closet without food, I wrote it down in a small notebook. I hid it inside the lining of Noah's old baby blanket. I have that blanket in my suitcase right now."

Ethan walked over to me, kneeling beside my chair. The look of profound sorrow in his eyes made my heart ache. "You shouldn't have had to endure that alone, Maya. If I had just looked harder, if I hadn't believed my mother's lies..."

"We can't change the past, Ethan," I said, reaching out to touch his face. "We can only fight for our children's future."

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the library burst open. Eleanor Blackwood walked in, flanked by two men in expensive gray suits. Her expression was triumphant, a cruel smile playing on her lips.

"Enjoy your little strategy meeting while you can," Eleanor purred, stepping into the room. "Because it's about to be cut short. Ethan, these gentlemen are from the department of child welfare. Someone filed an anonymous report this morning stating that you have brought three unregistered, potentially kidnapped children into this house, and that their biological father is currently searching for them after they were abducted from an airport."

My blood ran cold. Anonymous report. Eleanor had done this. She was using Tyler’s pursuit to destroy us, willing to weaponize child protective services just to rid her home of my presence.
