Chapter 5 - The Shield of Protection

The two social workers stepped forward, looking uncomfortable but determined to carry out their duty. The older of the two, a woman named Agent Reynolds, looked at me and then at the documents spread across the desk.
"Mr. Blackwood, Ms. Vance," Agent Reynolds said professionally. "We received a highly detailed report alleging that the three minors currently residing on this property were removed from their legal residence without the consent of their father, and that they are currently being held in an unstable environment. We are required by law to conduct an immediate welfare check and assessment."
"An unstable environment?" Ethan erupted, stepping between the social workers and me, his presence looming large and threatening. "Look around you! This is one of the most secure estates in the country. The children are sleeping in pristine rooms, being cared for by medical professionals and nutritionists. The only thing 'unstable' here is the malicious intent behind the person who called you."
He cast a look of pure hatred at his mother, who merely adjusted her pearl necklace with an air of innocent detachment.
"Ethan, please," I said, standing up and placing a hand on his arm. I needed to be strong. I couldn't let my fear show, not in front of the authorities. I looked directly at Agent Reynolds. "My children are in the guest wing. They are eating breakfast. You are welcome to see them, to talk to them. But you need to know the truth. We didn't flee a stable home. We fled a monster."
I walked over to my bag, pulled out Noah’s old baby blanket, and carefully snipped the hidden seam with Margaret’s desk scissors. I pulled out a small, battered black notebook filled with crowded, messy handwriting. I handed it to the social worker.
"This is a record of the last four years," I said, my voice steady despite the tears burning my eyes. "It contains dates, times, and descriptions of every instance of physical and emotional abuse my children and I suffered at the hands of Tyler Cross. It includes the night he broke my rib in front of Lily. It includes the day he threw Noah’s dinner into the trash because he called him a bad word. Read it, and then tell me if my children are safer with him or here."
Agent Reynolds took the notebook, her eyes widening as she flipped through the pages. The second social worker leaned in, his expression shifting from suspicion to profound gravity as he read the harrowing accounts of survival.
Eleanor’s smile began to fade. She hadn't anticipated the notebook. She had assumed I was a disorganized, desperate girl who had fled on a whim, leaving no paper trail.
"This is highly compelling evidence of a dangerous domestic situation," Agent Reynolds said, closing the notebook and looking sternly at Eleanor. "Mrs. Blackwood, whoever filed that report omitted these critical facts. Falsifying a child welfare report to manipulate a domestic dispute is a federal offense."
Eleanor’s face turned a sharp, ugly crimson. "I... I merely report what I am told by our security intelligence! I was trying to protect the family reputation!"
"Your family reputation won't survive a obstruction of justice charge, Mother," Ethan said coldly. "Gentlemen, please accompany Ms. Vance to see the children. You will see they are happy, safe, and thriving."
After a thorough one-hour interview with the children—during which Noah proudly declared that Ethan was his hero and that the "bad man" could never hurt them again—the social workers filed an emergency protection order on our behalf, officially recognizing Ethan’s estate as a safe haven and initiating an investigation into Tyler Cross for child endangerment.

As the authorities left, Eleanor slinked away to her quarters, her first major strike completely neutralized. But as Ethan and I stood in the hallway, Margaret walked up to us, her face grim.
"The social workers are on our side, but Tyler has found a loophole," Margaret warned, holding up her tablet. "He just hired Arthur Vance—no relation to you, Maya—the most ruthless, corrupt fix-it lawyer in Chicago. They’ve just filed a counter-suit in family court, claiming you have a history of mental instability and are withholding the children to extort money from Ethan Blackwood. And they’ve called a press conference for this afternoon."
