Chapter 7 - The Battle at the Gates

The morning air was crisp and freezing. A wall of satellite trucks and reporters lined the perimeter of the Blackwood estate, their cameras pointed toward the grand wrought-iron gates.

Ethan and I walked down the driveway together, our hands locked tightly. I wore a simple, elegant dark green dress that Martha had altered for me. I held my head high. Behind us, out of view of the cameras but safe in the security booth, Noah, Lily, and Emma were watching with Martha.

As we reached the microphones set up near the gate, the reporters erupted into a chaos of shouted questions.

"Mr. Blackwood! Did you kidnap Tyler Cross’s children?" "Ms. Vance! Are you extorting the Blackwood family?"

Ethan stepped up to the microphone first, his voice booming through the sound system, instantly silencing the crowd.

"Thank you for coming," Ethan said calmly. "Yesterday, you heard a series of tragic, calculated lies from a man named Tyler Cross. Today, we are here to provide the truth. Not with words, but with irrefutable evidence."

He nodded to Marcus, who activated a massive LED screen mounted on the security wall behind us.

The screen flickered to life, showing the security footage from Gate C17 at Chicago O'Hare. The video clearly showed me mopping the floors, my three children sleeping peacefully beside the cart. Then, it zoomed in on Tyler, lurking behind the pillar, his face twisted in a predatory scowl, watching my every movement, his hand aggressively gesturing toward me whenever I looked up. The footage showed him advancing on us, his pace accelerating violently until Ethan intervened.

"This is not a father searching for his family," Ethan stated, pointing to the screen. "This is a convicted domestic abuser stalking his victim at her workplace. Ms. Vance fled an environment of severe physical and emotional trauma to save her children's lives. I did not kidnap anyone; I exercised my duty as a human being to protect a vulnerable family from a imminent threat."

The reporters began whispering furiously, taking notes. But I stepped up to the microphone next, pulling the silver locket from around my neck.

"Five years ago, I loved Ethan Blackwood," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the crisp air. "We were separated not by choice, but by a cruel fabrication. Eleanor Blackwood, Ethan’s mother, forged my signature on a five-million-dollar exit contract while I was recovering from a near-fatal car accident, and she used her wealth to banish me from New York. She hid the fact that I was pregnant with Ethan's son. This boy, Noah, who was called a 'street rat' by his own grandmother inside those walls, is the rightful heir to the Blackwood name."

The crowd gasped. The narrative had completely flipped. It was no longer a story about a predatory billionaire; it was a story about a heroic father, a resilient mother, and a corrupt matriarch who had torn a family apart.

Suddenly, a commotion broke out at the back of the press pool. A battered pickup truck slammed to a halt near the media vehicles. Tyler jumped out, his face contorted with rage, holding a heavy iron tire iron.

"You lying bitch!" Tyler screamed, rushing toward the gate, completely blind to the dozens of live cameras pointed at him. "You’re mine! You and the kids belong to me!"

Before he could even reach the perimeter wall, four undercover security guards lunged from the crowd, tackling him to the asphalt. The tire iron clattered away. Within seconds, two police cruisers, which had been stationed nearby at Ethan’s request, pulled up, their sirens wailing. The officers slammed Tyler against the hood, clicking handcuffs onto his wrists in full view of every major news network in the state.

Arthur Vance, his slick lawyer, quietly slipped out of the press pool, abandoning his client as the realization sank in that they had just broadcasted an attempted violent assault live to millions of viewers.
