Chapter 6 - The Poison of the Press

By 3:00 PM, every major news outlet in the Midwest was broadcasting live from a rented hall downtown. Tyler stood at a podium, looking uncharacteristically clean in a borrowed suit, though his eyes remained wild and erratic. Beside him stood Arthur Vance, a slick lawyer with a reputation for destroying lives for a high fee.

"My kids were stolen from me," Tyler cried into the microphones, squeezing out fake tears that made me sick to my stomach as I watched the screen in the library. "Maya... she’s sick. She’s been struggling with postpartum depression and hallucinations for years. She thinks I’m hurting her, but I love her! I’ve been working two jobs to support us. And then this billionaire, Ethan Blackwood, uses his money to seduce her at the airport, kidnaps my family, and locks them away in his mansion! He’s using his wealth to steal my daughters!"

The media devoured it. Billionaire Tycoon Kidnaps Working-Class Family was a headline that generated millions of clicks. The Blackwood Hotels stock began to dip immediately, flashing red numbers across the financial tickers.

"Turn it off," Ethan commanded, his voice shaking with a terrifying, contained rage. Marcus, the driver, clicked the remote, and the screen went black.

"Ethan, the board is calling an emergency meeting for tomorrow morning," Marcus warned nervously. "The PR firm says the public sentiment is turning against us rapidly. They want you to issue a statement distancing yourself from Maya."

"Tell the board to go to hell," Ethan snapped, slamming his fist onto the desk. "I will not distance myself from the woman I love or my son. If they want to vote me out, let them try. I’ll pull my personal capital and start a rival chain by next week."

I walked over to him, placing both hands on his chest, forcing him to look at me. "Ethan, no. You can't destroy everything you’ve built because of us. Tyler wants a fight. He wants to drag us into the mud because he thinks that's the only place I know how to survive. But I’m not that scared girl in the airport anymore."

I turned to Margaret. "Can we fight fire with fire? Can we hold our own press conference?"

"A public back-and-forth can be damaging, Maya," Margaret cautioned. "Unless... we change the narrative entirely. We don't just defend; we expose."

"What do you mean?" Ethan asked, his eyes narrowing.

"We don't just talk about Tyler," I said, a sudden, fierce clarity taking hold of me. "We talk about Eleanor. We talk about the car accident five years ago. We show the world the forged contract she used to separate us. We show them that Ethan isn't a kidnapper—he’s a father who was robbed of his son by his own mother's greed. And we release the video footage from the airport showing Tyler stalking me."

Ethan looked at me, a slow, proud smile spreading across his face. The submissive, broken girl he had rescued had vanished. In her place stood a mother ready to burn down an empire to protect her cubs.

"Marcus, coordinate with our media partners," Ethan ordered, his voice ringing with renewed strength. "We hold a press conference at the estate gates tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM. We release the airport footage, the medical records, and the forensic handwriting analysis of the forged settlement. Let's show the world the real face of the Blackwood family."
