Chapter 3 - The Ghost at the Door

Hannah’s face went entirely pale, the color draining from her lips until she looked like a marble statue in the pouring rain. Her fingers slipped against the cold glass of the restaurant door. She recognized the man sitting at table seven instantly. The tailored suit, the absolute stillness, the lethal authority radiating from his posture. It was Julian. The man she had spent five years running from, the man whose shadow she saw in every dark alleyway in Chicago, Philadelphia, and now New York.

“Open the door,” Julian ordered Marcus.

The security lock clicked, and the heavy glass door swung open. Hannah stumbled inside, the cold wind and rain blowing in behind her. Her clothes were soaked—a simple nurse’s scrub top underneath a cheap denim jacket. She didn't look at the luxury chandeliers, the frightened politicians, or the private security guards. Her eyes were locked onto Maya.

“Mommy!” Maya squeaked, instantly sliding out of the leather chair, her purple backpack clutched to her chest. “I found a safe chair! The man let me sit down.”

Hannah rushed forward, collapsing onto her knees on the wet marble floor, wrapping her arms around Maya so tightly the little girl gasped. Hannah was trembling violently, her chest heaving as she buried her face in her daughter’s wet curls. “Maya... oh baby, thank God. Don’t you ever run off like that again, do you hear me? You were supposed to wait under the awning—”

“A man in a black hat told me to go inside, Mommy,” Maya whispered into her mother’s shoulder. “He said you were waiting inside.”

Julian’s eyes darkened instantly. He stood up from table seven, his towering figure casting a shadow over the mother and child. A man in a black hat. It hadn't been an accident. Maya hadn't stumbled into Belladonna’s by chance. She had been guided here. The bomb threat, the grey sedan, the child being pushed inside—it was a message from his rivals. The Moretti family had discovered his secret. They had found his bloodline.

“Hannah,” Julian said, his voice deep, gravelly, and vibrating with an emotion he hadn't allowed himself to feel in seven long years.

Hannah stiffened. She slowly stood up, pulling Maya behind her back, using her own frail body as a shield against the billionaire kingpin. She looked up at him, her green eyes filled with a volatile mix of terror, defiance, and a deep, agonizing heartbreak.

“Julian,” she whispered, her voice cracking. “Please. She has nothing to do with this. She doesn't know anything. Let us go. We’ll leave New York tonight. You will never see us again.”

“You think I’m going to let you walk out that door after what just happened?” Julian stepped closer, his jaw clenched tightly. “Look outside, Hannah. The Morettis know who she is. They used a fake bomb threat to herd her into this room like a lamb to a slaughterhouse. If you walk out those doors right now, you won't make it to the corner of the street.”

Hannah looked out the glass doors, her breath hitching as she saw Marcus and three other armed security men moving toward the street with weapons drawn. The reality of the world she had tried so hard to escape was crashing down around her.

“She’s mine, Julian,” Hannah hissed fiercely, tears finally spilling over her cheeks. “You don't get to claim her. You don't get to pull her into your world of blood and money.”

May you like

Julian looked down at Maya, who was peeking out from behind Hannah’s leg, her gray eyes staring up at him with total innocence.

“She has my eyes, Hannah,” Julian said softly, his voice breaking for the first time in his life. “She’s a Blackthorne. And whether you like it or not, that means I will burn this entire city to the ground before I let anyone hurt her.”
