Chapter 9 - The Safe Place

One year later.
The grand dining room of Belladonna’s was closed to the public for a private celebration. The low chandeliers cast a warm, golden glow over the long table, which was decorated with fresh white roses and colorful streamers.
Sitting around the table were Sloane Avery, Marcus, several reformed board members, and the hospital staff who had worked with Hannah. At the center of the room stood a massive, six-tier birthday cake with six glowing candles.
Maya stood on a chair, wearing a beautiful princess dress, her dark curls pinned back with a small diamond barrette—a gift from her Aunt Sloane. She looked radiantly happy.
Julian stood beside Hannah, his arm wrapped tightly around her shoulders. A beautiful diamond ring caught the light on Hannah’s left hand—they had married in a quiet, private ceremony by the lake three months ago.
“Make a wish, Maya!” Marcus called out, a rare grin on his tough security face.
Maya closed her eyes tightly, took a deep breath, and blew out all six candles under a chorus of cheers and applause.
As the catering staff began to cut the cake, Maya slid down from the chair and walked over to table seven—the exact table where she had walked in a year ago, soaking wet and looking for a safe place to sit. She climbed onto the leather chair, pulling her old purple backpack onto her lap.
Julian walked over, sitting in the chair across from her, just as he had done that rainy night. He smiled warmly at his daughter. “What did you wish for, princess?”
Maya looked around the beautiful room, then looked at her mother, who was laughing with Sloane, and then looked back into Julian’s winter-gray eyes. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the old paper napkin from the diner—the one with the crayon maze on the back, now neatly laminated to protect it.
“I didn't wish for anything, Daddy,” Maya said, her little voice clear and full of absolute certainty. “Because my wish already came true.”
“Oh yeah? What was your wish?” Julian asked, his heart expanding with a profound, overwhelming love.
Maya reached across the table, placing her small hand over his. “I wished that Mommy and I would never have to run again. I wished we would find a safe chair with you forever.”
May you like
Julian squeezed her hand, his eyes shining with tears of pure, unshakeable happiness. He looked up as Hannah walked over, leaning down to kiss the top of Maya’s head before resting her hand on Julian’s shoulder.
The last Blackthorne had finally found his peace. The innocent little girl in the red raincoat hadn't just sat at his table; she had saved his soul, turning the cold silence of his empire into a beautiful, lasting legacy of love.
