Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Grass

The next morning, the Blackthorne estate was filled with the scent of pine and fresh rain. Hannah sat in the massive, modern kitchen, watching Maya eat a plate of chocolate chip pancakes prepared by the estate’s private chef.
Julian entered, wearing a casual dark sweater, looking less like a ruthless tycoon and more like a man trying to figure out how to be a father. He sat at the kitchen island, placing a glass of fresh orange juice in front of Maya.
“Thank you for the pancakes, Mr. Julian,” Maya said, her mouth covered in syrup.
“You can call me Julian,” he said softly, a genuine smile touching his lips.
“My mommy says your name is important,” Maya noted, swinging her legs. “She said you’re the king of New York.”
Julian looked at Hannah, who looked away, her cheeks flushing.
Suddenly, Sloane Avery walked into the kitchen, her face tight with worry. She held a secure satellite phone in her hand. “Julian. We have a problem. The Morettis aren't just targeting your family physically. They’ve launched a corporate hostile takeover of Blackthorne Developments through an offshore banking syndicate in Switzerland. They’ve bought out three of our major board members.”
Julian stood up, his eyes flashing with lethal intent. “Who betrayed us?”
“Donald Sterling,” Sloane revealed. “He sold his ten percent share last night. If the Morettis acquire another five percent by the end of the week, they will have legal access to the company’s internal servers—including the private security protocols for this estate.”
Hannah stood up, her panic returning. “Julian, if they get those files, they can bypass the gates. They can get to Maya.”
“They won't get the files,” Julian stated coldly. “Sloane, call a mandatory board meeting for tomorrow morning at the Wall Street headquarters. I want every shareholder in that room. It’s time to show the board what happens to people who sell out the Blackthorne name.”
As Julian walked out of the kitchen to prepare for war, Hannah followed him into the grand hallway, grabbing his arm. “Julian, let me come with you tomorrow.”
Julian turned, looking down at her. “It’s dangerous, Hannah. The Morettis are desperate.”

“I’m not staying here like a prisoner while you fight for our daughter’s future,” Hannah said, her green eyes burning with the same fierce defiance that had made him fall in love with her years ago. “I am Maya’s mother. And I won't let these monsters take away the peace I spent five years building.”
Julian studied her face, then slowly reached up, his large hand gently cupping her cheek. “You haven't changed at all, Hannah. Still the bravest woman I’ve ever known.”
