Chapter 4 - The Citadel of Iron

Thirty minutes later, Julian’s armored convoy tore through the rain-slicked streets of Manhattan, heading toward the Blackthorne estate in upstate New York—a massive, high-security fortress hidden behind acres of private woodland.

Inside the luxury SUV, the silence was suffocating. Maya had fallen asleep, her head resting on Hannah’s lap, her tiny fingers still holding the silver chain of her purple backpack. Hannah stared out the window, watching the city lights blur into streaks of neon grey.

Julian sat across from her, his laptop open, his fingers flying across the keyboard as he coordinated a retaliatory strike against the Moretti family. Sloane Avery sat next to him, her legal mind working at maximum capacity.

“We’ve identified the plates on the grey sedan,” Sloane said quietly, showing Julian the screen. “It’s registered to a front company owned by Vincent Moretti. They’ve been tracking Hannah since she took the nursing job at Bellevue Hospital three months ago. They were waiting for the right moment to leverage her against you.”

Julian closed his laptop with a sharp click. “Vincent Moretti just signed his own death warrant.”

“Julian, no,” Hannah interrupted, her voice tired but resolute. “No more violence. That’s why I left Chicago. I woke up every morning terrified that I would open the front page of the newspaper and see your face next to a crime scene. I didn't want my daughter growing up surrounded by bodyguards, armored cars, and the blood of other people.”

Julian looked at her, his expression unreadable. “You left me without a word, Hannah. You let me believe you were dead or gone forever. I spent two years tearing Chicago apart looking for you.”

“Because your father was still alive back then, Julian!” Hannah shouted softly, careful not to wake the sleeping child. “Arthur Blackthorne would have taken Maya from me the second she was born. He would have raised her to be a monster just like he raised you and your brothers. I did what I had to do to keep her soul clean.”

Julian flinched slightly. The mention of his late father always struck a raw nerve. Arthur Blackthorne had been a tyrant, a man who viewed human beings as assets or liabilities. Julian had spent the last three years purging the criminal elements from the family business, trying to legitimize the empire, but the sins of the past were not easily washed away.

The convoy arrived at the Blackthorne fortress. The massive iron gates swung shut behind them, backed by thermal cameras and armed guards.

As Julian lifted a sleeping Maya out of the vehicle, she stirred slightly, opening her gray eyes. “Are we at your castle?” she murmured, rubbing her nose against his shoulder.

“Yes, Maya,” Julian whispered, holding her close, feeling the fragile, precious weight of his own flesh and blood. “You’re safe here. Nobody can touch you inside these walls.”
