Chapter 10 - Redefining the Empire

With the legal battles behind us, winter arrived in Chicago, bringing a thick blanket of pristine white snow that made the city look like a fairytale.

Ethan’s transformation was complete. Under his leadership, Montgomery Enterprises underwent a massive rebranding. The old, exclusionary policies were replaced with transparent corporate governance. The company launched a nationwide initiative to support single mothers and funded legal defense funds for families facing corporate intimidation.

One Saturday afternoon, Ethan took the boys and me to the grand opening of the first Sophia Vance Early Learning Center in downtown Chicago—a state-of-the-art facility built entirely on corporate grants.

The boys ran through the brightly colored hallways, testing out the new toys and slides, while the local press captured photos of Ethan cutting the ribbon, not as a ruthless corporate titan, but as a proud father and partner.

That evening, we hosted a private celebration at the Montgomery estate. The dark, oppressive atmosphere that Eleanor had maintained for decades was completely gone. The heavy velvet curtains had been replaced with light, airy linens, and the grand ballroom was filled with the laughter of children and the warmth of true friends.

I stood by the grand fireplace, watching Ethan spin Liam around in the air while Leo and Lucas cheered.

Arthur Pendelton, who had voted to remove Ethan months ago but had since become one of his staunchest supporters, walked up next to me, holding a glass of champagne.

"I must admit, Sophia," Arthur said, looking at the family with a soft, genuine smile. "I was wrong about you. And I was wrong about what this company needed. You didn't break this empire open to destroy it. You broke it open to let the light in."

"Thank you, Arthur," I said softly. "Sometimes, an empire needs to crack before it can be rebuilt into something beautiful."
