Chapter 8 - Healing in the Light

The storm passed, leaving behind a clean, crisp Chicago morning. The arrest of Eleanor Montgomery and Senator Hastings dominated global news, signaling the absolute collapse of two of the city's most powerful dynasties.

But inside my penthouse, the world was quiet.

For the next two weeks, Ethan didn't go into the office once. He delegated all corporate duties to his newly appointed, trustworthy chief operating officer. Instead, he spent every single day at my apartment.

At first, it was awkward. But slowly, the walls began to crumble.

He learned how to make pancakes exactly the way Leo liked them—burnt slightly at the edges. He spent hours on the living room floor building intricate Lego castles with Liam, showing a level of patience I had never seen in him during our marriage. And at night, when Lucas had nightmares about the loud helicopter, Ethan would sit by his bed, singing a low, rumbling lullaby his own father had sung to him before the Montgomery name became a curse.

One evening, after the boys had fallen asleep, Ethan and I stood on the balcony, watching the calm waters of Lake Michigan. The summer breeze was warm, carrying the scent of blooming jasmine from the pots nearby.

"The board approved a permanent restructuring today," Ethan said quietly, breaking the silence. "The Montgomery foundation is being turned into a trust for victims of domestic and corporate abuse. And 20% of the company's profits will permanently fund early childhood education centers across the state."

I smiled, looking at him. The sharp, tense lines of his face had softened over the past weeks. He looked younger, happier, and profoundly grounded. "Your father would be proud of that, Ethan."

"I don't care about my father's ghost anymore, Sophia," Ethan said, turning his body toward me. He reached out, his fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear. His touch sent a familiar, comforting warmth deep into my chest. "I only care about what the woman standing in front of me thinks."

"Ethan..." I breathed, my heart skipping a beat.

"I know I messed up, Sophia. I know I let the world poison what we had," he said, his gray eyes filled with a raw, unprotected vulnerability. "But these past two weeks... seeing you with our sons, building this life... I know I have no right to ask, but I want to earn you back. Not for the cameras, not for the name. Just for me. Because I never stopped loving you."

I looked into his eyes and saw the truth. The cold, distant prince was gone. Standing before me was the man I had fallen in love with in a small college library years ago—a man who was finally ready to put his family above his empire.

"You're doing a good job, Ethan," I said softly, allowing myself to lean slightly into his space. "The boys love you."

"And what about their mother?" he whispered, his face inches from mine.

"Their mother is willing to let you take her out on a proper first date," I smiled, a tear slipping down my cheek. "No media. No business. Just us."

Ethan smiled, a bright, beautiful expression that lit up his entire face, and pressed a gentle, lingering kiss to my forehead. "It's a deal."
