Chapter 4 - A Quiet Dinner and Loud Truths

That evening, for the first time in four years, Ethan came to my penthouse. He didn't bring bodyguards or assistants. He arrived with a simple paper bag containing takeout from the small Italian trattoria we used to frequent when we were first dating—before his father died and the weight of the world fell on his shoulders.

The boys had already eaten and were fast asleep in their rooms, exhausted from the excitement of the past few days.

We sat at my kitchen island, the lights of Chicago glittering outside the floor-to-ceiling windows. The silence between us was heavy, filled with the ghosts of the past.

"Thank you," Ethan said softly, breaking the silence. "For today. For the shares. For... saving my life out there. I had no idea you had built such an empire of your own."

"I had to, Ethan," I said, swirling the red wine in my glass. "When I left, I realized that innocence is a luxury the poor cannot afford. If I wanted to protect Leo, Liam, and Lucas from your mother, I had to become someone she couldn't easily crush. I worked eighteen-hour days while nursing triplets. I didn't have time to cry."

Ethan reached across the counter, his hand hesitant before covering mine. His skin was warm, and a familiar electric spark shot up my arm, making my breath hitch. "Sophia... I am so deeply, profoundly sorry. I was blind. I was so consumed by trying to prove to my father's ghost and my mother that I could run the company that I failed to see the viper in my own home."

I pulled my hand back gently. "Apologies don't rewrite four years of missed birthdays, Ethan. They don't erase the nights Liam had croup and I was alone in an emergency room, praying he would breathe, while I saw photos of you at charity galas on my phone."

Ethan flinched, pain etching deep lines around his eyes. "I know. I don't expect you to forgive me today, or even this year. But please, let me be a father. Let me show them—and you—who I really am when I'm not being managed by a monster."

"I won't keep you from the boys," I said honestly. "They need a father. But Ethan, your mother and the Hastings family aren't going to roll over. Caroline Hastings is a humiliated woman from a political dynasty. They will strike back."

"Let them," Ethan said, his jaw tightening, his gray eyes flashing with the ruthless determination that made him a feared CEO. "I destroyed my own happiness once by listening to them. I won't let them touch my family again. Tomorrow, I'm filing for full recognition of paternity and establishing a private trust for the boys that even a congressional sub-committee can't touch."

Before he left that night, Ethan walked into the boys' bedroom. I watched from the doorway as he bent down and gently kissed each of their foreheads. When he turned back to me, there were tears in his eyes.

"They look just like you when they sleep," he whispered. "With their hands curled by their cheeks."

My heart squeezed painfully. The love I had buried so deep inside myself was beginning to claw its way to the surface, and it terrified me.
