Chapter 9 - The Trial of the Century

The legal proceedings against Eleanor Montgomery and the Hastings family dragged on through the autumn, keeping the city in a state of perpetual fascination. The courtrooms were packed daily, but Ethan and I remained unified, refusing to let the media circus disrupt the peace we were building for our children.

On the final day of the trial, Ethan took the stand. I sat in the front row of the gallery, holding his gaze as he calmly and systematically delivered the final blows to his mother’s defense. He presented financial ledgers, encrypted emails, and security footage that proved beyond a shadow of a doubt the extent of Eleanor’s corporate espionage and child endangerment.

When the verdict was read, Eleanor was sentenced to fifteen years in a maximum-security federal facility with no possibility of parole. Senator Hastings received ten years for campaign fraud and bribery, and Caroline Hastings was ordered to pay a massive settlement for her role in the cover-up.

As Eleanor was led away in her orange jumpsuit, she stopped in front of the gate where Ethan and I stood. Her eyes were still cold, but the power behind them was entirely gone.

"You ruined us, Ethan," she hissed, her voice a hollow shell of its former authority. "You destroyed your own heritage for her."

Ethan looked at her, his expression filled not with anger, but with a profound, quiet pity. "No, Mother. I saved my heritage. My sons will grow up knowing that a name means nothing if it isn't built on love and truth. Goodbye, Eleanor."

We walked out of the courthouse hand-in-hand, stepping into the bright, crisp autumn air. The paparazzi swarmed us, their questions a deafening roar, but Ethan simply put his arm around my waist, shielding me from the flashes as we climbed into our waiting car.

"It's finally over," I whispered, leaning my head against his shoulder as the car pulled away from the curb.

"It is," Ethan said, kissing the top of my head. "The past is officially dead, Sophia. From now on, we only look forward."
