Chapter 1 - The Sovereign and the Stray

The silence in the war room was heavier than the thunderstorm raging outside. Avery could hear the rhythmic drip-drip of rainwater pooling around her bare, blood-stained feet. The six guards remained frozen, their hands still hovering near their holsters, waiting for a single nod from the man at the head of the obsidian table.
Dante Russo did not nod. He leaned back in his leather chair, swirling a lowball glass of amber liquid. The ice clinked softly against the crystal. His dark eyes mapped every detail of Avery’s appearance—the ruined tulle, the mud-splattered pearls, the white-knuckled grip she kept on the flash drive.
"Avery Lawson," Dante said, the syllables rolling off his tongue with a dangerous, deliberate slowness. "The prodigy engineer. The ghost who fixed my foundation when the city’s best architects almost drowned my investments."
Avery swallowed hard, her throat raw. "You remember."
"I don't forget people who are useful to me," Dante replied, setting his glass down with a soft thud. "And I certainly don't forget people who break into my private sanctuary. You haven't answered my question, cara. Why are you running from Whitaker?"
Before Avery could speak, the heavy steel door behind her rattled. A muffled, authoritative voice echoed from the alleyway outside. Grant’s men had found the entrance. They were attempting to override the lock.
The six guards instantly looked to Dante. Avery felt her heart leap into her throat. If Dante threw her out, she was dead. If he handed her over to Grant, her life’s work would become the instrument of her own erasure.
"They're coming for me," Avery whispered, her voice cracking. "Grant... he didn't want a wife. He wanted my mind. He forged my signature on patent transfers. He’s absorbing my entire life’s work into Whitaker Enterprises. This drive has the proof. He will kill me to keep it quiet."
Dante looked at the metal door, which shuddered under a heavy blow. Then he looked back at Avery. A slow, terrifyingly beautiful smirk spread across his lips. It wasn't a smile of kindness; it was the look of a predator who had just watched a rival step directly into his territory.
"Perfect," Dante murmured, standing up. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and radiated an undeniable, lethal authority. "I needed a wife."
Avery blinked, stunned. "What?"
"The State Department is currently auditing my international shipping licenses," Dante said calmly, stepping around the table. He walked toward her, his custom-tailored leather shoes silent on the black floor. "They dislike unmarried, solitary men holding monopolies on the docks. They want a respectable face. A partner. A legitimate anchor."
He stopped a mere foot away from her. The scent of expensive cologne, cedarwood, and rain washed over her.
"Grant Whitaker wants to destroy you to build his empire," Dante continued, his dark eyes locking onto hers. "I want to use your legitimacy to protect mine. Marry me, Avery. I will give you a name he cannot touch, resources he cannot match, and a legal shield he cannot pierce. In exchange, you give me the public image of a reformed man—and you help me fortify this city."
The door behind them groaned as a heavy tool was applied to the frame. Time was up.
"And if I say no?" Avery asked, her breath hitching.
"Then I open that door," Dante said, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper. "And you see if Grant’s love survives your betrayal. Choose."
Avery looked at the door, then at the man offering her a different kind of cage—but one where she would at least have a weapon. She extended her hand, the flash drive pressed between her palm and his.
"Deal," she said.
Dante gripped her hand, his palm warm and unyielding. He turned to his men. "Let them in."
The guards moved instantly. One of them disengaged the electronic lock and threw the heavy door open.
Three of Grant’s security detail stepped into the room, their coats soaked, their expressions grim. The leader, a scarred man named Vance whom Avery recognized, stepped forward, his eyes locked onto her.
"Avery," Vance said, ignoring the armed men in the room. "Mr. Whitaker is waiting. You've made a scene. Let's go home."
"She is home," Dante’s voice cut through the air like a blade.
Vance stopped, his eyes adjusting to the dim, cold light of the room, finally focusing on the master of the tower. His face paled slightly. "Mr. Russo. This is a private family matter. The lady belongs to—"
"The lady belongs to no one," Dante interrupted, stepping into Avery's line of sight, shielding her smaller frame completely with his broad shoulders. "But as of three minutes ago, Miss Lawson is my fiancée. And in this house, we do not tolerate uninvited guests demanding the return of Russo property."
May you like
Vance’s hand twitched toward his jacket. Before he could even clear his leather holster, six silencers were pointed directly at his chest.
"Tell Grant," Dante said, his voice dangerously soft, "that if he wants his asset back, he will have to fight the Russo family for it. Now, get out of my sight before I use your blood to paint my lobby."
