Chapter 3 - The Gala of Ghosts

The Grand Ballroom at the Plaza Hotel was a sea of silk, diamonds, and old money. The occasion was the annual Metropolitan Development Gala, an event Grant Whitaker had spent six months planning. It was supposed to be his victory lap—the celebration of his upcoming marriage and the public unveiling of his new, revolutionary infrastructure project.

Instead, it became a theater of war.

Avery stood at the entrance of the ballroom, her hand tucked securely into the crook of Dante’s elbow. She wore a stunning, backless gown of midnight-blue satin that flowed around her like dark water. Her hair was swept up, revealing the faint, healing scratch on her neck from her escape. On her left hand, the black diamond caught the light of a thousand chandeliers.

Dante looked down at her, his expression impassive but his eyes tracking every movement in the room. "Ready?"

"I've spent three years designing structures to withstand Category 5 hurricanes, Dante," Avery whispered, her grip tightening slightly on his arm. "A ballroom full of vipers won't break me."

"That’s my girl," he murmured.

As they stepped into the ballroom, the music seemed to falter. The collective whisper that rippled through the high-society crowd was palpable. The media cameras, originally waiting for the arrival of city officials, turned in unison toward the entrance. Flashbulbs exploded, painting the room in blinding white light.

The headline was already writing itself: The Runaway Bride Returns with the King of the Underworld.

At the far end of the room, standing beside a ice sculpture of a skyscraper, was Grant Whitaker.

He looked exactly as Avery remembered—tall, blond, impeccably groomed in a classic tuxedo. But as his eyes locked onto Avery, and then onto Dante, the practiced, old-money smile vanished from his face. His jaw clenched so tightly the muscles in his cheek twitched.

Grant separated himself from a group of city council members and walked directly toward them, his strides long and aggressive. Two of his personal security guards followed closely behind.

"Avery," Grant said as he reached them, his voice vibrating with a terrifying mixture of rage and forced calm. "What is the meaning of this? You disappear from our wedding, leave eight hundred guests waiting, and now you walk into my event with... this man?"

Before Avery could speak, Dante stepped slightly forward, his presence immediately dominating the space between them.

"Whitaker," Dante said, his tone conversational, almost bored. "You should thank me. Your former fiancée was wandering the streets in a storm because her previous partner lacked the capacity to protect her. I merely provided shelter."

"She is my fiancée, Russo," Grant spat, his eyes flashing with malice. "We have a legal agreement. We have a life planned."

"Correction, Mr. Whitaker," Avery said, stepping out from behind Dante’s shoulder, her voice clear and resonant enough to carry to the nearby onlookers. "We had a fraud. I found the patent transfers. I found the psychological profile. You didn't want a wife; you wanted a slave to build your empire. The agreement is void. The engagement is over."

She raised her left hand, letting the massive black diamond catch the light directly in Grant’s face.

"I’ve moved on to someone who values my work," Avery added, looking up at Dante with a perfectly executed smile of affection. "And my heart."

Grant’s face turned an ugly, mottled red. He took half a step toward Avery, his hand rising instinctively.

In a fraction of a second, Dante’s demeanor changed from bored businessman to lethal predator. He caught Grant’s wrist mid-air, his grip so fierce that Avery could hear the faint, sickening groan of bone compressing against bone.

"Touch her," Dante whispered, his voice so low and violent it made the surrounding air feel cold, "and I will tear your arms from your torso and feed them to the crabs in the Hudson. This ballroom is public, Grant. But the ride home is very dark. Remember who owns the streets you drive on."

Dante flung Grant’s hand back. Grant stumbled slightly, his security guards instantly reaching into their jackets. But before they could draw, four of Dante’s men, disguised as gala guests, stepped into the circle, the subtle imprints of weapons visible beneath their formal wear.

Grant straightened his jacket, his breathing ragged. He looked at Avery, his eyes filled with a cold, sociopathic promises of retribution. "You think you're safe with him, Avery? He’s a monster. A criminal. He will use you up and discard you in a ditch when he’s done."

"Then we'll be monsters together, Grant," Avery replied coldly. "At least he doesn't pretend to be a saint."

Dante smiled—a real, genuine smile that reached his dark eyes—and led Avery away, leaving Grant standing alone in the center of a whispering, judgmental crowd.
