Chapter 8 - The Eye of the Storm

The rain began at 10:00 AM, a torrential downpour that quickly turned the sky into a bruised, charcoal gray. By noon, the winds were howling at seventy miles per hour, rattling the reinforced glass windows of Russo Tower.

The tropical depression had officially evolved into a Category 3 hurricane.

Down at the Manhattan Infrastructure Control Center, Grant Whitaker stood in the main observation room, surrounded by panicked city technicians. On the massive central monitor, the water levels of the East River were rising rapidly, approaching the critical flood stage.

"Sir!" a technician shouted over the sound of alarms. "The surge is hitting the lower East Side docks! The physical valves we installed aren't responding to our remote commands! They’re stuck in the open position!"

"What?" Grant roared, slamming his fists onto the control console. "Force them shut! Override the system!"

"We can't!" the technician cried, his face pale. "There’s a digital virus in the mainframe. It’s routing all control permissions to an external IP address. It’s completely locked us out!"

"Looking for this, Grant?"

Grant spun around.

The doors to the observation room had been opened. Standing in the doorway, soaked from the storm but completely unbothered by the chaos, were Dante and Avery. Dante wore a long black cashmere coat over his bandaged shoulder, his hand buried deep in his pocket. Avery stood beside him, holding a sleek, military-grade tablet displaying the live diagnostic feed of the city’s grid.

Behind them stood six federal agents, led by Special Agent Marcus Vance—the estranged, honest cousin of the corrupt chairman.

"Avery," Grant whispered, his eyes wide with a manic, unhinged fury. "You... you ruined it. You changed the code."

"I fixed the code, Grant," Avery said, her voice cutting through the sound of the alarms like a siren. "The valves are wide open. The surge water is being safely redirected into the deep-channel reservoirs I designed three years ago. Your docks are safe, Dante’s docks are safe, and the city is secure."

She tapped her tablet, and a series of financial documents, fraudulent contracts, and the original psychological profile flashed onto the main observation monitor for everyone in the room to see.

"But your career is entirely flooded," Avery added coldly.

Special Agent Vance stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Grant Whitaker. You are under arrest for corporate fraud, domestic terrorism, attempted murder, and the bribery of public officials. Step away from the console."

Grant looked at the federal agents, then at the monitors displaying his total ruin. The old-money smile was gone forever, replaced by the hollow, terrified look of a man who had realized he was no longer a god.

In a desperate, final act of madness, Grant reached into his jacket, pulling a concealed pocket knife and lunging toward Avery. "If I lose everything, you die with me!"

He didn't even make it two steps.

Dante moved with the speed of a striking viper. His uninjured arm shot out, catching Grant by the throat. With a single, fluid exertion of brutal strength, Dante lifted Grant completely off his feet and slammed him face-first onto the hard steel control console.

The knife clattered away, rolling across the floor.

Dante leaned down, his lips brushing against Grant’s bleeding ear, his voice a low, terrifying vibration that only Grant could hear. "I told you what would happen if you touched her. You’re lucky the feds are here, Grant. Because if we were alone in my alleyway, you wouldn't be going to a cell. You’d be going into the concrete of my next foundation."

Dante flung him toward the federal agents, who quickly pinned Grant to the floor, ratcheting the handcuffs tightly around his wrists. As they dragged him away, screaming obscenities into the storm, the room finally fell quiet.
