Chapter 5 - The Ambush at Pier 42

The counter-sequence was complete, but it couldn't be uploaded remotely. Grant had isolated the sub-grid control panel inside a private, high-security server room located at Pier 42—a massive, heavily guarded facility that Whitaker Enterprises had leased under the guise of an eco-friendly shipping terminal.

"It’s a trap," Dante said as they stood in the penthouse, reviewing the tactical layout of the pier. "Grant knows you’re the only one who can reverse the code. He’s baiting you to come to the facility."

"I have to go," Avery insisted, wearing a dark, form-fitting tactical jumpsuit Dante’s men had provided. "The encryption requires a direct physical hardwire connection to the mainframe. If I don't do it tonight, the weather sensors are predicting a tropical depression shifting into a Category 3 hurricane by Tuesday. The valves will lock, and the lower city is gone."

Dante looked at her for a long, silent moment. Then, he unholstered a compact, matte-black pistol from his side and handed it to her. "Do you know how to use this?"

"You spent the last two weeks teaching me at your private range," Avery said, taking the weapon with a steady hand. "Safety off, squeeze, don't jerk. Aim for center mass."

"Good," Dante said, pulling his own heavy-caliber weapon from beneath his coat. "Because tonight, I'm not leaving your side. If he wants a fight, we give him an execution."

At 2:00 AM, under the cover of a thick, heavy fog that rolled off the East River, Dante, Avery, and a team of eight elite Russo operatives infiltrated Pier 42. They moved like shadows, slipping past the perimeter cameras using a loop program Avery had uploaded to the facility's security grid.

They reached the server room without incident. The room was cold, filled with the hum of thousands of server towers and the eerie blue glow of status lights.

Avery rushed to the central console, pulling out her modified laptop and plugging the hardwire cable into the mainframe port. "I'm in," she whispered, her fingers flying across the keyboard. "The counter-sequence is uploading. It's taking control of the bypass valves... thirty percent... forty..."

Suddenly, the blue lights in the room flashed to a violent, bloody red.

The heavy steel security doors of the server room slammed shut, locking them inside. A low, mocking laugh echoed through the room's intercom system.

"Did you really think it would be that easy, Avery?" Grant’s voice boomed from the speakers, filled with a twisted, manic triumph. "I knew you couldn't resist a design flaw. I built this entire facility as a honey pot for you and your mafia boyfriend."

On a large wall monitor, a live camera feed showed the exterior of the server room. Dozens of heavily armed men, carrying tactical rifles, were moving into position, surrounding the room.

"You ruined my life, Avery," Grant’s voice snarled. "The board is turning against me. The media is digging into my finances. But tonight, it all ends. A tragic warehouse fire at a secure facility. The runaway bride and the notorious mob boss, caught in an illicit meeting gone wrong. It’s a clean, tragic headline."

"Dante," Avery said, her voice tight as she looked at the progress bar on her laptop. "Fifty percent. I need four minutes to finish the upload and override the door locks."

Dante stepped in front of her console, his weapon raised toward the reinforced glass window of the server room. His men took up defensive positions behind the server racks.

"You have four minutes, Avery," Dante said, his voice entirely devoid of fear, filled only with a cold, terrifying certainty. "No matter what happens outside this door, do not stop typing. I will handle the rest."

The glass window shattered as a flashbang grenade exploded outside. The door was blown open with a kinetic charge, and the firefight began.
