Chapter 9 - The New Foundation

Six months later.

The storm had long since passed, leaving behind a city that had not only survived but had grown stronger. The Whitaker empire had been completely dismantled, its assets liquidated and purchased by a new, independent engineering conglomerate: Lawson-Russo Infrastructure.

The sky over Manhattan was a brilliant, crisp blue on a beautiful spring afternoon.

At the top of Russo Tower, the grand terrace had been transformed. White roses—real ones this time, chosen by Avery—lined the glass perimeter. A small, intimate gathering of fifty people sat in the elegant seating area. There were no city politicians, no fraudulent businessmen, and no media cameras. There were only the people who mattered: the loyal operatives, the honest builders, and the family they had chosen.

Avery stood at the end of the aisle. She wore a simple, elegant ivory silk gown that flowed around her like a dream. No torn tulle, no mud, no blood. Her feet were perfectly healed, stepping gracefully across the white carpet.

At the altar stood Dante. He wore a flawless black tuxedo, his shoulder completely healed, his dark eyes locked onto her with a warmth that the rest of the world would never be privileged to see.

As she reached him, he took both of her hands in his. His palms were warm, steady, and safe.

"We don't have a contract this time," the priest said, smiling softly at the couple. "Do you, Dante Russo, take Avery Lawson to be your lawfully wedded wife, to love, honor, and protect, through the storms and the peace, for as long as you both shall live?"

Dante looked down at her, his lips curving into that familiar, beautiful smirk—but this time, it was filled with an absolute, undeniable devotion.

"I do," Dante said, his voice resonant and clear. "She’s the only structure in this city I couldn't break. I intend to keep her forever."

Avery laughed softly, a bright, beautiful sound that carried on the spring breeze. "And do you, Avery Lawson, take Dante Russo to be your husband, to build a life together, to fortify each other against the world, and to stand by his side through every war?"

"I do," Avery said, her eyes shining with absolute certainty. "He’s the only man who ever gave me a foundation worth standing on."

As the priest pronounced them husband and wife, Dante pulled her into his arms, dipping her slightly as he kissed her thoroughly under the brilliant New York sun. The crowd erupted into applause, the sound echoing across the skyline.

They had started their story in the dark, running from a trap through a silver storm. But as Avery looked out over the city she had saved, her hand locked securely in the hand of the man who owned the streets, she knew they had built something entirely indestructible.

They were no longer assets. They were a sovereign nation of two.
