Chapter 1 The Call Detective Rose Had Been Waiting For

Chapter 1

The Call Detective Rose Had Been Waiting For

The scream echoed through the marble foyer before the body hit the stairs.

"You ruined my life!"

Blonde hair whipped through the air as Savannah Caldwell lunged forward, both hands striking the shoulders of the woman standing dangerously close to the staircase.

For a split second, everything slowed.

Emma Lawson instinctively reached for the polished oak banister.

Her fingers missed.

Her eight-month pregnant body tilted backward.

"No—!"

The first impact came against the edge of the top step.

A sharp crack exploded through her lower back.

Then gravity claimed her.

She rolled helplessly down fifteen hardwood stairs, her body twisting unnaturally as her head, shoulders, and swollen belly slammed against the polished wood.

The sound was unbearable.

Thud.

Crack.

Thud.

A ceramic vase shattered as her arm struck the hallway table.

By the time she reached the bottom, she lay motionless on the marble floor, one hand clutching her stomach while blood slowly spread beneath her pale blue maternity dress.

Silence swallowed the mansion.

The grandfather clock in the hallway ticked once.

Twice.

Three times.

Emma struggled to breathe.

Every inhale felt like broken glass inside her ribs.

Her baby kicked frantically beneath her trembling hand.

"Please..."

Her voice barely existed.

"My baby..."

At the top of the staircase, Savannah stared downward.

Not horrified.

Not guilty.

Only frightened of the consequences.

"Oh my God," she whispered.

"I didn't mean—"

Before she could finish, another woman rushed forward.

Margaret Lawson.

Emma's mother-in-law.

Seventy years old.

Elegant.

Perfect silver hair.

Designer silk blouse.

The respected matriarch of one of the city's wealthiest families.

Emma looked toward her with desperate hope.

Margaret would help.

She had to.

Instead...

Margaret hurried past the bleeding pregnant woman without even looking down.

She climbed the stairs toward Savannah.

"My poor girl..."

Margaret wrapped both arms around the trembling blonde woman.

"Are you hurt?"

Savannah burst into tears.

"She provoked me."

"I know."

"I just lost control."

"I know, sweetheart."

Emma couldn't believe what she was hearing.

Blood continued pooling beneath her body.

Her vision blurred.

Yet the only person being comforted...

Was the woman who had pushed her.

Margaret gently stroked Savannah's hair.

"It wasn't your fault."

"You've been under so much stress."

"I tried to stay calm."

"I know you did."

Emma let out a painful gasp.

"Please..."

Margaret finally glanced down the staircase.

Not with concern.

With annoyance.

"What now?"

Emma pressed both shaking hands against her stomach.

"I... need... an ambulance..."

Margaret sighed dramatically.

"You always know how to ruin everyone's day."

Emma stared.

Had she heard correctly?

The older woman slowly descended three steps before folding her arms.

"You owe Savannah an apology."

Emma blinked.

"What?"

"You heard me."

Margaret's voice became colder.

"If you hadn't kept provoking her, none of this would have happened."

Emma struggled to sit upright.

Every movement sent unbearable pain through her abdomen.

"I didn't..."

"You embarrassed her."

"I only asked where my husband was."

"You accused her in front of everyone."

"I asked one question..."

Margaret shook her head.

"She's like a daughter to me."

Emma finally understood.

She had never truly belonged in this family.

For four years she had convinced herself things would improve.

That Margaret would eventually accept her.

That her husband Daniel would stop defending his mother.

That Savannah—the beautiful family friend who somehow lived in the mansion nearly every week—would stop treating her like an unwanted guest.

Instead...

Everything had only grown worse.

Now she was bleeding on the floor.

And they still expected her to apologize.

Savannah slowly wiped fake tears from her cheeks.

"I'm sorry, Margaret."

"I shouldn't have reacted."

Margaret hugged her tighter.

"No."

"This is not your burden."

She pointed at Emma.

"She's always been dramatic."

Emma closed her eyes.

Pain radiated through her entire body.

Then—

A warm sensation spread beneath her legs.

Not blood.

Fluid.

Her heart nearly stopped.

"No..."

Her water had broken.

Eight weeks early.

The baby.

"Oh God..."

She placed both hands over her stomach.

"Please stay with me."

Above her, Margaret rolled her eyes.

"She's pretending again."

Savannah looked uncertain.

"What if she's really hurt?"

Margaret answered without hesitation.

"She wants attention."

Emma couldn't hear another word.

Her baby had suddenly stopped moving.

Complete silence.

"No..."

She rubbed her belly desperately.

"Please kick."

Nothing.

Her breathing became frantic.

Not again.

Not after everything.

Months earlier, her obstetrician had warned her.

"Any severe abdominal trauma could endanger both you and the baby."

Emma had remembered every word.

Now that warning echoed through her mind like a death sentence.

She looked toward the front entrance.

Too far away.

Her phone.

Where was her phone?

Slowly...

Painfully...

She slid one trembling hand into the pocket of her oversized cardigan.

Still there.

The black phone.

Margaret noticed.

"What are you doing?"

Emma didn't answer.

Her fingers shook so violently she could barely unlock the screen.

Savannah suddenly panicked.

"Take it away."

Margaret descended several more steps.

"Who are you calling?"

Emma pressed a single contact.

Only one name.

Detective Rose Bennett.

The phone rang once.

Immediately answered.

"I've been waiting."

Emma nearly collapsed from relief.

"It happened."

Her voice cracked.

"They pushed me."

Silence.

Then Detective Rose spoke with terrifying calm.

"Are you conscious?"

"Yes."

"Is the baby moving?"

Emma closed her eyes.

"No."

A pause.

Rose's voice hardened.

"Listen carefully."

"I'm dispatching everyone."

"Don't hang up."

"They're already on the way."

Margaret frowned.

"What detective?"

Emma whispered,

"You knew."

Margaret stopped walking.

"What?"

"You knew I wasn't alone."

The older woman's face lost color.

Savannah grabbed her arm.

"What is she talking about?"

Emma smiled despite the pain.

A tiny, exhausted smile.

"For six months..."

"I've been collecting everything."

Margaret's heartbeat accelerated.

"What have you done?"

Emma struggled to breathe.

"The recordings."

Margaret froze.

"The photographs."

Savannah's eyes widened.

"The medical reports."

Margaret's confidence finally cracked.

"You..."

Emma continued.

"The messages."

"The witnesses."

"The bank transfers."

Every sentence made the older woman paler.

"No."

Emma looked directly into Margaret's eyes.

"I knew someday..."

"...one of you would try to kill me."

The mansion became impossibly quiet.

Outside...

Sirens.

One.

Then two.

Then six.

Blue lights flashed through the stained-glass windows.

Savannah stepped backward.

"They came too fast."

Margaret whispered,

"That's impossible."

Emma held the phone against her ear.

Detective Rose spoke quietly.

"Emma..."

"They're here."

The front doors exploded open.

Paramedics rushed inside carrying emergency equipment.

Behind them came uniformed officers.

Then homicide detectives.

Then crime-scene investigators.

Not one ambulance.

Not one patrol car.

An entire investigative task force.

Leading them all was Detective Rose Bennett.

Forty-three.

Sharp-eyed.

Calm under pressure.

She walked directly past Margaret without acknowledging her.

Instead, she knelt beside Emma.

She gently took Emma's blood-covered hand.

"I'm here."

Emma finally allowed herself to cry.

"My baby..."

"We're going to do everything we can."

Rose looked toward the paramedics.

"Move."

"Now."

They immediately began treatment.

One medic checked Emma's pulse.

Another placed oxygen over her face.

A third searched for the baby's heartbeat.

Everyone waited.

The small Doppler machine crackled.

Static.

Silence.

Then—

A faint...

Rapid...

Heartbeat.

The paramedic looked up.

"I've got one."

Emma sobbed in relief.

Rose squeezed her hand.

"Hold on."

"We're not finished."

She slowly stood.

Then turned toward Margaret and Savannah.

Neither woman spoke.

Rose's expression remained unreadable.

"I told both of you six months ago."

Margaret's lips parted.

Rose continued.

"If Mrs. Lawson suffered one more 'accident'..."

"...I would treat it as attempted murder."

The words echoed through the mansion.

Savannah's knees nearly gave out.

Margaret whispered,

"You can't prove anything."

Rose smiled.

A cold, patient smile.

"I wasn't waiting for proof."

She reached into her coat.

Pulled out a sealed search warrant.

Then another.

"And another."

"There are warrants for this house..."

"...your financial records..."

"...your security system..."

"...and every phone belonging to this family."

Margaret stared in disbelief.

"You've been investigating us?"

Rose looked directly into her eyes.

"No."

"I've been investigating you."

She glanced upstairs toward the staircase still stained with fresh blood.

Then back at the two horrified women.

"This wasn't today's crime."

May you like

"It was simply..."

"...the first one you committed while I was already watching."
