Chapter 4 The Baby Who Vanished

Chapter 4

The Baby Who Vanished

For one impossible second, Detective Rose Bennett was certain she had misheard.

"The newborn... has disappeared."

The words hung in the air like smoke after an explosion.

"What do you mean disappeared?" Rose demanded.

Officer Grant struggled to catch his breath.

"The hospital initiated a Code Pink."

Every officer in the room froze.

Code Pink.

The two words every police officer dreaded hearing.

A missing infant.

Saint Catherine Medical Center

Three minutes earlier...

The maternity ward had been peaceful.

The newborn Lawson boy rested inside a temperature-controlled bassinet beside the neonatal observation room.

A young nurse named Allison had stepped away for less than thirty seconds to retrieve fresh medication.

When she returned...

The bassinet was empty.

No crying.

No blanket.

No baby.

Only a single white teddy bear lying where the infant should have been.

At first she assumed another nurse had moved him.

Then she checked the chart.

No transfer.

No doctor's order.

Nothing.

Her scream echoed through the hallway.

"THE BABY'S GONE!"

Instantly the hospital erupted into chaos.

Automatic security doors slammed shut.

Elevators locked.

Every exit sealed electronically.

Red emergency lights flashed across the ceilings.

A recorded announcement repeated through every hallway.

"Code Pink. Code Pink. All personnel remain at your stations."

Visitors looked around in confusion.

Doctors abandoned conversations.

Security guards sprinted toward every entrance.

Someone had stolen a newborn.

Intensive Care

Emma slowly regained consciousness.

Everything felt distant.

Heavy.

She blinked beneath harsh lights.

Her throat burned.

A nurse noticed movement.

"Mrs. Lawson?"

Emma tried to speak.

"My..."

Her voice barely existed.

The nurse smiled gently.

"Your surgery went well."

Emma forced another whisper.

"My baby..."

The nurse hesitated.

Far too long.

Emma noticed.

Panic replaced exhaustion.

"My son?"

The nurse reached for the emergency button.

"Please stay calm."

Emma's heartbeat monitor accelerated.

"Where..."

"My baby?"

No answer.

Emma immediately understood.

Something was terribly wrong.

Waiting Room

Daniel stood beside the nursery observation window speaking with a pediatrician when alarms suddenly echoed through the hospital.

"What is that?"

The doctor's face turned white.

A security officer sprinted past.

Another locked the stairwell.

Someone yelled,

"Seal the east entrance!"

Daniel frowned.

"What happened?"

Nobody answered.

Then he noticed nurses crying.

One doctor whispered to another.

"It's the Lawson baby."

Daniel felt the blood leave his face.

"No."

He grabbed the pediatrician.

"What happened to my son?"

The doctor couldn't meet his eyes.

Daniel shouted louder.

"WHAT HAPPENED?"

Finally...

The doctor whispered,

"Someone took him."

Daniel didn't remember letting go.

He simply found himself running.

Down hallways.

Past security.

Past terrified staff.

Toward the nursery.

Police officers stopped him.

"You can't go in."

"My son!"

"The room is now a crime scene."

Daniel shoved past one officer before another restrained him.

"My baby is in there!"

"We're trying to find him."

Daniel collapsed against the wall.

For the second time that night...

Everything he loved was disappearing.

Police Headquarters

Rose drove through the rain with lights flashing.

Grant spoke rapidly from the passenger seat.

"Hospital surveillance shows someone wearing a neonatal nurse uniform."

"Face visible?"

"No."

"They wore a surgical mask."

"Height?"

"About five foot seven."

Rose frowned.

"Savannah."

Grant nodded.

"Same height."

"But..."

Rose interrupted.

"No."

"Savannah has been in custody for two hours."

"So whoever took the baby..."

"...was working with her."

Hospital Security Office

Rose arrived minutes later.

Dozens of security monitors covered one wall.

Technicians replayed footage repeatedly.

"There."

A masked nurse pushed an empty neonatal cart down Corridor Seven.

Perfectly normal.

Nothing suspicious.

Thirty-eight seconds later...

The cart rolled back.

Now covered with a blue blanket.

Too carefully.

Too completely.

Rose zoomed in.

"The wheels."

Everyone looked.

One wheel left a faint trail.

Too much weight.

The cart wasn't empty anymore.

The kidnapper calmly pushed the newborn straight past three nurses.

No one questioned anything.

Another camera.

Loading dock.

The disguised nurse exited through the staff entrance.

A hospital van waited outside.

License plate hidden by mud.

The driver never exited.

The doors opened.

The cart disappeared inside.

Twenty seconds later...

The van drove away.

Rose looked at the timestamp.

Fourteen minutes before Code Pink.

Professional.

Planned.

Officer Grant received a radio call.

"We found the vehicle."

Rose turned.

"Where?"

"Abandoned."

"Six miles away."

"No baby."

Emma's Hospital Room

Rose entered quietly.

Emma looked impossibly pale.

Daniel sat beside her holding her hand.

Neither noticed Rose at first.

Emma stared blankly toward the ceiling.

"They took him."

Nobody answered.

"They took my baby."

Daniel squeezed her hand.

"We'll find him."

Emma slowly turned toward Rose.

Her eyes contained no tears anymore.

Only fear.

"Detective..."

Rose stepped closer.

"We're doing everything we can."

Emma whispered,

"It wasn't Savannah."

Rose paused.

"What?"

Emma struggled to breathe.

"Savannah..."

"...was never smart enough."

The detective listened carefully.

Emma continued.

"She always..."

"...waited for instructions."

Rose's mind immediately returned to the offshore account.

Silver Crest Holdings.

Emma closed her eyes.

"My father warned me once."

Daniel frowned.

"Your father?"

Emma nodded weakly.

"He told me..."

"...if anything ever happened..."

"...never trust anyone wearing silver."

Rose felt every muscle tighten.

"Silver?"

Emma barely managed another whisper.

"The ring."

"The pin."

"The logo."

Then exhaustion overtook her.

The monitors stabilized.

She slept.

Rose stepped into the hallway.

Grant immediately approached.

"We searched Savannah's phone."

"And?"

"We decrypted another folder."

"What did you find?"

Grant handed her a tablet.

One photograph.

Savannah standing beside a man wearing an expensive gray suit.

His face partially hidden.

Only his hand was visible.

On one finger...

A silver signet ring engraved with an unfamiliar crest.

Rose enlarged it.

Grant whispered,

"That's the same symbol Emma just described."

Rose nodded slowly.

"Run facial recognition."

Five minutes later...

The computer beeped.

Match found.

Rose stared at the screen.

"No..."

Grant leaned closer.

"You know him?"

Rose did.

Unfortunately.

Very well.

Victor Hale.

Former intelligence contractor.

Current CEO of Silver Crest Holdings.

Suspected financier in three international child trafficking investigations.

Never convicted.

Always untouchable.

Grant looked horrified.

"You think he ordered the kidnapping?"

Rose answered quietly.

"I think this baby was never the real target."

"What do you mean?"

She looked back toward Emma's room.

"They wanted Emma alive."

"They wanted the child."

"So why?"

Rose stared at Victor Hale's file.

"Because someone believes this baby is worth far more than money."

Interrogation Room

Savannah finally asked for her lawyer.

Before he arrived...

Rose entered one last time.

She placed Victor Hale's photograph on the table.

Savannah's confident expression vanished.

"You know him."

Silence.

"He took the baby."

Still silence.

Rose leaned closer.

"You can save that child."

Savannah's hands shook violently.

For the first time...

She looked genuinely terrified.

"You don't understand."

"Help me understand."

Savannah whispered only four words.

"They'll kill everyone."

Rose remained calm.

"Who?"

Savannah slowly lifted her eyes.

"The family..."

"...that owns Silver Crest."

Before Rose could ask another question—

The lights inside the interrogation room suddenly went dark.

The entire police station lost power.

Emergency generators failed to activate.

For five terrifying seconds...

Everything was black.

Then...

Gunshots erupted from somewhere inside the building.

One.

Two.

Three.

Officers shouted.

Glass shattered.

Rose reached for her weapon.

When the emergency lights finally flickered back on...

The interrogation room door stood open.

The handcuffs hung empty from the chair.

Savannah Caldwell...

May you like

Had vanished.
