Chapter 6 The Truth They Buried

Chapter 6
The Truth They Buried

The hospital room disappeared into darkness.
Only the rhythmic beeping of Emma Lawson's heart monitor proved she was still awake.
Somewhere in the hallway—
A woman screamed.
Then came the sound of running feet.
Daniel jolted awake.
"Emma?"
She grabbed his wrist.
"Someone's here."
Heavy footsteps stopped just outside the door.
A shadow appeared beneath it.
Then another.
Daniel quietly stood between Emma's bed and the entrance.
The doorknob slowly turned.
Click.
The door opened only a few inches before a flashlight beam cut through the darkness.
"Police!"
"Don't move!"
Detective Rose Bennett stepped inside with two tactical officers behind her.
Daniel let out a shaky breath.
Rose immediately noticed the bouquet of lilies.
"Who brought those?"
Emma pointed weakly.
"A nurse."
"There was no name."
Rose picked up the flowers.
Something metallic glinted beneath the ribbon.
A miniature GPS transmitter.
Grant carefully removed it.
"They wanted to confirm she was still here."
Rose nodded.
"They're watching the room."
She unfolded the note Emma had found.
The monastery address.
Her expression hardened.
"It's a trap."
Emma looked up.
"But..."
"What if my son is really there?"
Rose remained silent for several seconds.
Finally, she answered honestly.
"He might be."
"But if they wanted you to rescue him..."
"They wouldn't have sent flowers."
Forty Minutes Earlier...
At an abandoned monastery overlooking the frozen shoreline of Lake Superior...
Victor Hale stood alone before a stone fireplace.
The newborn slept peacefully in a wooden cradle.
The caretaker entered quietly.
"The police have recovered Savannah's files."
Victor smiled faintly.
"They were supposed to."
"You planned that?"
"I planned everything."
The woman hesitated.
"They're coming."
Victor nodded.
"I know."
He looked toward the sleeping infant.
"The question isn't whether Detective Bennett arrives."
"It's whether she arrives before Preston Lawson does."
The caretaker frowned.
"Preston?"
Victor smiled.
"No."
"The man Emma believes was her father."
Saint Catherine Hospital
Rose gathered Daniel, Emma, and FBI Special Agent Lucas Harris inside a secured conference room.
The federal government had finally become involved.
Lucas spread several classified files across the table.
"We've been investigating Silver Crest Holdings for thirteen years."
Daniel stared.
"Why hasn't anyone stopped them?"
Lucas sighed.
"Because Silver Crest isn't a corporation."
"It's an intelligence network."
Emma's face remained pale.
"I knew my father worked for dangerous people."
Lucas looked directly at her.
"No."
"You don't understand."
"He didn't work for them."
"He founded them."
Silence.
Emma blinked.
"No..."
"That's impossible."
Rose slid a faded photograph across the table.
A much younger man stood beside Victor Hale.
Emma immediately recognized him.
Her father.
Richard Lawson.
Only...
The name beneath the picture wasn't Richard.
It read:
Richard Ashcroft
Founder — Project Orion.
Emma's breathing became uneven.
"No..."
"My father was a banker."
Lucas quietly replied,
"That was his second identity."
Twenty-Five Years Earlier
Project Orion had begun as a government initiative.
Officially...
It protected endangered witnesses.
Unofficially...
It created entirely new identities for powerful families.
Politicians.
Judges.
Corporate executives.
Foreign diplomats.
Children disappeared from one life...
Only to reappear somewhere else under different names.
When the government shut Orion down...
Richard Ashcroft refused.
He stole the archives.
Victor Hale helped him disappear.
Together...
They built Silver Crest.
They sold new identities.
Erased criminal records.
Moved fortunes across continents.
And when clients became liabilities...
They vanished forever.
Emma had never known.
She had been raised under another surname.
Another history.
Another lie.
Emma Remembered
A memory suddenly surfaced.
She was six years old.
She had wandered into her father's study late at night.
He hadn't noticed her.
He was arguing with Victor Hale.
She remembered only one sentence.
"If anything happens to me..."
"...promise you'll never touch my daughter."
Victor had answered calmly.
"I don't make promises."
Her father had looked terrified.
Emma had never understood why.
Until now.
Police Intelligence Command
Satellite images identified unusual activity around the monastery.
Multiple SUVs.
Armed guards.
Power generators.
Rose studied the photographs.
"They're preparing for us."
Lucas nodded.
"So we prepare better."
Daniel stood.
"I'm coming."
"No."
Rose's answer came instantly.
"My son is there."
"And Emma needs you alive."
Daniel clenched his fists.
"I've already failed my family once."
"I'm not doing it again."
Rose looked at him carefully.
Then nodded.
"Fine."
"But you follow every order."
The Monastery
Snow covered everything.
The old stone building looked abandoned.
But thermal imaging revealed more than twenty heat signatures inside.
SWAT officers quietly surrounded the property.
Rose whispered into her radio.
"Everyone ready?"
"Ready."
Lucas checked his watch.
"Move."
The front doors exploded inward.
"FBI!"
"POLICE!"
"DROP YOUR WEAPONS!"
Chaos erupted.
Armed men opened fire from balconies.
Glass shattered.
Snow sprayed upward as bullets struck frozen ground.
Rose moved through the entrance beside Grant.
Room after room stood empty.
Too empty.
"This place was staged," Grant muttered.
Then...
A baby's cry echoed somewhere below them.
Daniel heard it first.
"My son!"
He sprinted toward the basement stairs.
"Daniel!" Rose shouted.
Too late.
Underground
Daniel burst into a hidden chamber.
The newborn lay safely inside a crib.
No guards.
No Victor.
Only the child.
Daniel rushed forward.
"My boy..."
As he lifted the infant...
A slow clap echoed behind him.
Victor Hale stepped from the shadows.
"So predictable."
Daniel turned.
"You."
Victor smiled.
"You finally found your son."
"Take him."
"Leave us alone."
Victor laughed softly.
"I never wanted the baby."
Daniel froze.
"What?"
"I wanted you."
The chamber lights suddenly illuminated.
Hidden cameras surrounded the room.
Victor continued.
"Every detective."
"Every federal agent."
"Every satellite."
"I led them exactly where I wanted."
Daniel slowly understood.
"This is a distraction."
Victor smiled.
"Exactly."
At the Hospital
Emma suddenly sat upright.
"My father."
Rose's voice crackled through the radio.
"Emma?"
"They're not after my son anymore."
"What?"
"They're after the Orion archive."
Lucas frowned.
"The archive disappeared twenty years ago."
Emma shook her head.
"No."
"It didn't."
Everyone stared.
She whispered the truth her father had told her on his deathbed.
"The archive..."
"...was never hidden in a vault."
"It was hidden inside a person."
Rose's heartbeat quickened.
"Who?"
Emma slowly placed her trembling hand against her own chest.
"My father encoded everything."
"Every identity."
"Every account."
"Every client."
"He memorized it."
"When he knew he was dying..."
"He taught it to me."
Silence filled the room.
Emma closed her eyes.
"I've carried Orion my entire life..."
"...without realizing it."
At that exact moment...
Every computer inside Saint Catherine Hospital suddenly shut down.
Every hallway monitor turned black.
Then one message appeared across every screen.
WELCOME HOME, EMMA.
WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU.
Outside the hospital...
A convoy of black SUVs quietly surrounded the building.
And standing beside the lead vehicle...
Watching the illuminated windows...
Was a man everyone believed had died fifteen years earlier.
Emma's father.
Richard Ashcroft.
Alive.
May you like
Smiling.
