Chapter 5 The House of Silver

Chapter 5
The House of Silver

The emergency lights painted the police station in an eerie crimson glow.
For three endless seconds, no one moved.
Then Detective Rose Bennett shouted.
"LOCK THE BUILDING!"
Her voice snapped every officer back into action.
"Seal every exit!"
"Nobody leaves!"
Boots thundered across polished floors as officers sprinted in every direction.
Rose rushed into the interrogation room.
The chair lay overturned.
Savannah's handcuffs rested neatly on the floor.
Not broken.
Unlocked.
She knelt beside them.
No struggle.
No blood.
Only one detail caught her attention.
A tiny silver coin.
Barely larger than a quarter.
Stamped with the same crest she had seen on Victor Hale's ring.
A crown wrapped around a serpent.
Grant picked it up carefully using latex gloves.
"They left this behind?"
Rose shook her head.
"No."
"They wanted us to find it."
Five Minutes Earlier...
During the blackout...
Savannah had heard the first gunshot.
Then the second.
Someone whispered from outside the interrogation room.
"Close your eyes."
She immediately recognized the voice.
Victor.
The door opened silently.
A pair of gloved hands unlocked her cuffs.
"You work for him," Savannah whispered.
The masked man ignored the question.
"You've talked too much."
Fear flooded her chest.
"They'll kill me."
"They already planned to."
The man handed her a black coat.
"Wear this."
"What about Detective Bennett?"
The man looked directly into her eyes.
"Forget the detective."
"Think about surviving another hour."
Saint Catherine Hospital
Emma could not sleep.
Every time she closed her eyes...
She heard her son's first cry.
Then silence.
Daniel sat beside her bed, exhausted.
Neither of them had spoken for nearly an hour.
Finally Emma whispered,
"They'll come back."
Daniel looked up.
"Who?"
"The people who took him."
"Why?"
She stared toward the rain outside the window.
"Because they still need something."
Daniel frowned.
"What?"
Emma hesitated.
For years she had buried every memory connected to her father.
Every warning.
Every secret.
Every lie.
But hiding them had almost cost her son.
"My father wasn't only an investment banker."
Daniel blinked.
"What are you talking about?"
"He worked with people."
"What people?"
"The kind who don't officially exist."
Daniel stared at her.
Emma continued.
"When I was fifteen..."
"...I accidentally walked into one of his private meetings."
She closed her eyes.
"I saw Victor Hale."
Daniel's heart skipped.
"You know him?"
Emma nodded.
"He wasn't called Victor then."
"He used another name."
"What name?"
Emma swallowed.
"Michael Rowan."
Daniel recognized it immediately.
The notorious financial strategist who had disappeared twelve years earlier.
Officially dead.
Apparently not.
Police Headquarters
Digital forensics finally unlocked Savannah's encrypted cloud account.
Officer Lewis called Rose immediately.
"You need to see this."
The screen filled with hundreds of surveillance photographs.
Emma.
At work.
Shopping.
Walking in parks.
Leaving hospitals.
Each photograph dated years before Savannah entered her life.
Rose frowned.
"They were watching her."
Lewis nodded.
"For at least seven years."
Another folder opened.
Medical reports.
DNA records.
Old adoption documents.
Birth certificates.
Rose froze.
"What..."
One file had Emma's name.
Another...
Had her son's.
The final page bore Victor Hale's signature.
Grant looked over her shoulder.
"What does it mean?"
Rose answered quietly.
"They didn't kidnap him because he's Daniel Lawson's son."
Grant frowned.
"Then whose son?"
Rose stared at the document.
"They believe he's someone else's."
Meanwhile...
Nearly one hundred miles away...
An abandoned monastery overlooked Lake Superior.
Snow drifted across cracked stone walls.
Inside...
A newborn cried softly.
A woman carefully adjusted his blanket.
She wore plain gray clothing.
No jewelry.
No makeup.
Only tired eyes.
The baby slowly settled.
A door opened.
Victor Hale entered.
The room instantly fell silent.
He approached the crib.
"So."
"The Lawson child."
The woman nodded.
"Healthy."
Victor gently touched the baby's tiny hand.
No cruelty.
No anger.
Only calculation.
"He has her eyes."
The caretaker hesitated.
"Should I prepare transport?"
Victor smiled faintly.
"Not yet."
"The mother will lead us to everything else."
Back at the Hospital
Rose arrived carrying the recovered documents.
Emma looked up immediately.
"You found something."
Rose sat beside her.
"I need you to answer one question honestly."
Emma nodded.
"Did your father ever mention Project Orion?"
Emma's face lost all color.
Daniel noticed instantly.
"You know it."
Emma whispered,
"I thought it ended."
Rose placed another photograph on the bed.
Victor Hale.
Twenty years younger.
Standing beside Emma's father.
Both smiling.
Emma began trembling.
"My father..."
"...worked for them."
Daniel stared in disbelief.
"What is Project Orion?"
Emma slowly looked at him.
"It wasn't a project."
"It was a list."
Rose remained silent.
Emma continued.
"A list of children."
Daniel felt sick.
"What children?"
"The children of people powerful enough to change governments."
Rose quietly added,
"Or destroy them."
Emma nodded.
"My father helped hide identities."
"New names."
"New families."
"New birth records."
Daniel struggled to understand.
"What does that have to do with our son?"
Emma's eyes filled with tears.
"Because..."
"...my father once told me..."
"...if I ever had a child..."
"...they would come."
Police Intelligence Division
Rose requested classified federal records.
Most remained sealed.
One document slipped through.
Project Orion.
Status:
Terminated.
Except...
Handwritten beneath the official seal.
Assets never recovered.
Grant frowned.
"What assets?"
Rose opened another attachment.
Genetic archives.
Bloodline records.
Encrypted family identities.
Grant whispered,
"This isn't human trafficking."
Rose nodded.
"No."
"It's identity laundering."
Children hidden under false names.
Families erased.
Entire bloodlines disappearing.
Grant looked horrified.
"And Emma?"
Rose answered.
"She wasn't chosen randomly."
Midnight
A black SUV stopped outside Saint Catherine Hospital.
Three men exited wearing hospital maintenance uniforms.
Security cameras briefly flickered.
One guard stepped outside to investigate.
He never returned.
Inside the vehicle...
A voice calmly spoke through an earpiece.
"Phase Two begins."
Emma's Room
Daniel had finally fallen asleep beside her bed.
Emma remained awake.
She stared at the empty bassinet beside the window.
Her son should have been there.
Instead...
Only silence.
Then...
Someone knocked softly.
A nurse entered carrying flowers.
"I have a delivery."
Emma frowned.
"I wasn't expecting any."
The nurse placed the bouquet beside the bed.
"There wasn't a card."
She smiled politely and left.
Emma stared at the flowers.
White lilies.
Too many.
One stem looked strange.
She reached carefully inside.
Hidden beneath the ribbon...
A folded note.
Only five handwritten words.
I know where he is.
Emma's breathing stopped.
She unfolded the second page.
An address.
An abandoned monastery near Lake Superior.
Before she could show Daniel—
The hospital lights suddenly went out again.
Darkness swallowed the room.
This time...
Emma heard footsteps approaching her bed.
Not nurses.
Not doctors.
Heavy.
Deliberate.
Someone whispered from the darkness.
"Mrs. Lawson..."
May you like
"It's time to come with us."
