Chapter 2 (Part 1) The House of Lies

Chapter 2 (Part 1)

The House of Lies

The ambulance disappeared into the rain with its sirens screaming through the empty streets.

Emma lay inside, barely conscious.

An oxygen mask covered her face while two paramedics worked frantically around her.

"Blood pressure is dropping."

"Pulse one-thirty."

"Possible placental abruption."

"We're losing time."

Another medic searched desperately for the baby's heartbeat.

Every few seconds, the tiny monitor crackled.

Each sound determined whether two lives—or none—would leave the operating room.

Emma forced her eyes open.

Only one thought remained.

Please... don't let my baby die.

Behind the ambulance, Detective Rose Bennett's SUV remained parked in front of the Lawson mansion.

Nobody was allowed to leave.

Uniformed officers blocked every driveway.

Crime Scene technicians photographed every inch of the staircase.

Yellow evidence markers covered the polished hardwood.

Marker One.

A broken pearl earring.

Marker Two.

Fresh blood.

Marker Three.

A long smear where Emma's body had struck the wall.

Marker Four.

A shoeprint.

Rose crouched beside the fourth marker.

Size seven.

High heel.

Exactly where Savannah had been standing.

Officer Grant approached quietly.

"The family lawyer is here."

Rose didn't even look up.

"He can wait."

"The husband just arrived."

That finally caught her attention.

Daniel Lawson stepped out of his Mercedes at a run.

His tie hung loose.

Rain soaked his expensive suit within seconds.

"What happened?"

Nobody answered.

He looked around in confusion.

Police cars.

Forensic vans.

Detectives.

Camera flashes.

Yellow tape across his own front door.

"What the hell is going on?"

He spotted his mother.

"Mom!"

Margaret rushed toward him.

For the first time that evening...

She cried.

Or at least she tried to.

"Daniel..."

"It's terrible."

"Emma slipped."

Daniel looked past her.

"Where is she?"

"The ambulance took her."

His face turned white.

"And the baby?"

Margaret hesitated only a fraction of a second.

"We don't know."

Daniel started toward his car.

"I have to get to the hospital."

"Mr. Lawson."

Rose's voice stopped him.

He turned.

"I need to ask you several questions."

"My wife could be dying."

"I understand."

"Then move."

"I can't."

Daniel stared at her.

"What?"

Rose calmly produced a document.

"You are being detained as a material witness."

"What?"

"Until we determine exactly what happened inside this house."

Daniel laughed in disbelief.

"My pregnant wife fell."

Rose said nothing.

Instead...

She handed him a photograph.

It showed bruises.

Dark purple fingerprints around Emma's upper arm.

Dated...

Three months earlier.

Daniel frowned.

"Where did you get this?"

Rose produced another.

A split lip.

Six weeks old.

Another.

Bruises across Emma's ribs.

Another.

A fractured wrist.

Hospital X-rays.

Another.

Photographs of shattered dishes.

Broken furniture.

Blood on a kitchen floor.

Daniel slowly lowered the stack.

"I've never seen these."

Rose watched him carefully.

"Exactly."

Inside the mansion...

Crime Scene investigators had begun opening every room.

One technician called out.

"Detective!"

Rose entered the study.

"What did you find?"

The young investigator pointed toward the security cabinet.

"The DVR."

Rose examined it.

"The hard drive was removed."

"When?"

"Recently."

Another technician entered carrying a toolbox.

"We found this outside."

A screwdriver.

Fresh fingerprints.

Rose nodded slowly.

"So..."

"They planned ahead."

Officer Grant appeared again.

"Detective."

"The neighbor is here."

Mrs. Eleanor Brooks lived directly across the street.

Seventy-eight years old.

Retired school principal.

She carried herself with remarkable confidence.

Rose smiled.

"Mrs. Brooks."

The older woman removed a flash drive from her purse.

"I believe this belongs to you."

Rose accepted it.

"You have it?"

"I've had it for weeks."

Margaret suddenly stepped into the room.

"What is that?"

Mrs. Brooks looked directly at her.

"Insurance."

Margaret frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

The elderly woman didn't answer.

Instead she looked at Rose.

"My grandson installed security cameras after someone vandalized my mailbox."

Rose nodded.

"I remember."

"They record the entire street."

Margaret's breathing became shallow.

Mrs. Brooks continued.

"They also record..."

"...your front entrance."

Silence.

Savannah slowly backed toward the doorway.

Rose noticed.

"No."

"You stay."

Mrs. Brooks placed another item onto the desk.

A notebook.

"I've been keeping records."

Daniel looked confused.

"Records?"

She opened the notebook.

Every page contained dates.

Times.

Descriptions.

June 12.

Emma crying outside at 11:43 p.m.

July 3.

Margaret shouting loud enough to hear across the street.

August 17.

Savannah throwing Emma's suitcase onto the lawn.

September 5.

Emma sitting alone in her car for three hours.

October 22.

Daniel leaving with Savannah while Emma remained inside crying.

Daniel stared at his mother.

"What is this?"

Margaret immediately recovered.

"An old woman's imagination."

Mrs. Brooks smiled sadly.

"No."

She turned another page.

"Photographs."

Dozens.

Emma carrying groceries alone while visibly pregnant.

Margaret watching without helping.

Savannah laughing.

Daniel driving away.

Every image timestamped.

Every image impossible to dismiss.

Daniel's voice became barely audible.

"Mom..."

Margaret snapped.

"She's been spying on us."

Rose corrected her.

"No."

"She became a witness."

Meanwhile...

Two forensic accountants entered carrying sealed evidence boxes.

Officer Grant looked surprised.

"Financial Crimes?"

Rose nodded.

"They're part of the task force."

Daniel frowned.

"What financial crimes?"

Rose looked at him.

"You really don't know."

"Know what?"

She handed him another document.

Bank statements.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Withdrawn.

Transferred.

Hidden.

All from accounts belonging...

To Emma.

Daniel's hands shook.

"This..."

"...this isn't possible."

Rose quietly asked,

"Did your wife ever tell you she inherited eight million dollars from her grandfather?"

Daniel blinked.

"What?"

Rose studied his expression.

It wasn't acting.

He genuinely had no idea.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

Margaret suddenly interrupted.

"Those accounts don't exist."

Rose smiled again.

"They did."

She looked toward the financial investigators.

"Until someone forged power-of-attorney documents."

Every eye slowly turned...

Toward Margaret.

The older woman's confident mask cracked for the first time.

Then another officer hurried into the study.

"Detective!"

Rose looked up.

"What now?"

The officer held a sealed evidence bag.

"We found another phone."

"Where?"

"Hidden behind the nursery bookshelf."

Rose took the phone carefully.

Its screen lit up.

One notification appeared.

Automatic Cloud Backup Complete.

Rose's expression changed.

She whispered,

"Oh..."

Officer Grant frowned.

"What is it?"

Rose looked toward the staircase.

Then toward Margaret.

Then at the phone again.

Finally she spoke.

"I don't think Emma was collecting evidence for six months..."

She opened the encrypted folder.

Video after video appeared.

Hundreds of them.

Rose slowly looked up.

"I think..."

"...she's been documenting this family..."

May you like

"...for almost four years."
