Chapter 2 - The Enigma of Nathan Brooks

The leather interior of the luxury sedan smelled faintly of rain, cedarwood, and expensive cologne. Outside, the downpour pelted the tinted windows in a relentless, rhythmic assault, blurring the neon signs of the city into streaks of bleeding color. Evelyn pressed her back against the passenger door, her breath coming in shallow, ragged hitches. Her bare feet were caked with dirt from the wet asphalt, and the hem of her evening dress was ruined, soaked through with cold rainwater.
Beside her sat Nathan Brooks.
He didn't move toward her, nor did he look away. His posture was perfectly composed, radiating a quiet, dangerous authority that made the spacious backseat feel suddenly very small. His sharp blue eyes studied her face, taking in the smudge of eyeliner beneath her lashes, the trembling of her jaw, and the way her fingers tightly gripped the damp fabric of her skirt.
“Three years?” Evelyn’s voice was barely a whisper, cracking under the weight of her adrenaline crash. “You’ve been looking for me for three years? Who are you? How do you know my name?”
Nathan didn't answer immediately. He reached down, picked up a plush cashmere blanket from the seat beside him, and extended it toward her. His movements were slow, deliberate, and entirely non-threatening.
“Wrap yourself in this first,” Nathan said quietly, his tone smooth like velvet but carrying an underlying layer of iron. “You’re shivering.”
Evelyn hesitated, her eyes darting to the glass partition separating them from the driver, Ben. Realizing she had nowhere else to run, she snatched the blanket, wrapping it tightly around her shoulders. The warmth was immediate, but it did little to ease the ice in her veins. “Answer me,” she demanded, trying to inject a strength into her voice that she didn't possess.
Nathan leaned back against the headrest, a subtle, unreadable expression crossing his handsome features. “Your father, Arthur Carter, wasn't just a businessman, Evelyn. Before he died, he was a silent partner in Brooks International. He saved my family's firm from a hostile takeover when I was barely old enough to understand the corporate world. But more importantly, three years ago, just weeks before his fatal heart attack, he came to my office.”
Evelyn’s breath caught in her throat. Her father’s death had always felt sudden, a devastating blow that left her entirely unprotected against Patricia’s predatory instincts. “Why did he go to you?”
“Because he knew what Patricia was,” Nathan said, his gaze hardening. “He discovered that she was systematically draining his personal accounts, funneling money into offshore shells. He knew his health was failing, and he knew that if he died, she would strip you of everything. He asked me to watch over you. He left me a contingency trust—a legal weapon to dismantle Patricia’s control over your inheritance when the time was right.”
“Then why wait three years?” Evelyn cried out, a tear escaping her eye. “Do you have any idea what she’s put me through? What she’s doing to my brother, Noah? She controls his medical fund! Tonight, she tried to sell me to Victor Lang!”

At the mention of Victor’s name, Nathan’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle ticked in his cheek. His eyes grew predatory. “I didn't wait by choice, Evelyn. Three years ago, Patricia found out about your father’s visit to me. She used her connections to tie my company up in a massive, fabricated regulatory lawsuit that took me overseas and drained my resources. It took me thirty-six months to clear my name and regain total control of my assets. I arrived back in the city tonight. I was on my way to your apartment when you literally threw yourself into my car.”
He leaned forward, reducing the distance between them, his steady gaze locking onto hers. “The games end tonight. Patricia and Victor Lang have no idea who they just crossed.”
