Chapter 6 - The Broken Trust

Three weeks later, the legal battle had intensified into an all-out war. The independent audit of Carter Industries had unearthed massive fraud, pointing directly to Patricia and Victor’s joint shell companies.
However, Patricia was desperate. One rainy afternoon, Evelyn received an anonymous package at Nathan’s penthouse. Inside was an old, leather-bound journal belonging to her late father, along with a medical report from the night he died.
Evelyn sat on the living room floor, her hands shaking violently as she read the pages. Nathan walked in, noticing her pale face, and immediately knelt beside her. “Evelyn? What is it?”
“It… it wasn't a natural heart attack,” Evelyn gasped, her voice choking on a sob. “Look at this, Nathan. My father suspected she was poisoning him. He had a private blood test done a week before he died. It showed traces of a digitalis derivative—a heart medication he was never prescribed. He was keeping this journal as evidence to go to the police, but she must have found out and accelerated the dosage before he could file the report!”
Nathan took the documents, his eyes rapidly scanning the medical data. His expression transformed into something terrifyingly dark. “This isn't just corporate fraud anymore. This is murder.”
Evelyn buried her face in her hands, weeping for the father she had lost and the horror he had endured alone. Nathan wrapped his strong arms around her, pulling her tightly against his chest. He held her as she cried, resting his chin on her hair, his heart beating a steady, reassuring rhythm against her cheek.
“I’m so sorry, Evelyn,” Nathan murmured softly, his hand gently stroking her back. “I swear to you, she will pay for this. I will not rest until your father gets justice.”

As Evelyn looked up into his eyes, through her tears, she saw a profound tenderness that went far beyond a promise made to a dead partner. In that moment of absolute vulnerability, she realized she was falling deeply in love with the man who had become her shield.
Suddenly, Clara burst into the room, her expression frantic. “Nathan, Evelyn—we have a situation at the hospital. Patricia just broke through the security team at St. Jude’s. She’s taken Noah.”
