Chapter 4 - Playing with Fire

The next morning, the war officially began.

Evelyn woke up to the smell of fresh coffee. Walking into the living area, she found Nathan and Clara, his brilliant chief legal advisor, reviewing a mountain of paperwork.

“Good morning, Evelyn,” Clara said with a warm, empathetic smile. “Nathan told me everything about last night. We’ve already initiated the first phase of our counter-strategy.”

Evelyn sat down, taking a mug of coffee. “What is the strategy?”

Nathan joined her, his expression focused and sharp. “Patricia took over your father’s firm, Carter Industries, by exploiting a loophole in his will that granted her temporary management rights until you reached twenty-five or got married. You turn twenty-five in six months. She’s panicking because she’s drained the company’s cash reserves to fund her own lavish lifestyle and Victor Lang’s failing real estate projects. That’s why she needed you to sign over your inheritance shares to Victor last night.”

“If Victor got those shares, he would absorb Carter Industries, wiping out the paper trail of Patricia’s theft,” Evelyn realized, the pieces of the puzzle falling into place.

“Exactly,” Nathan nodded. “So, we hit them where it hurts. Today, Brooks International filed a formal injunction in the high court, freezing all major asset transfers at Carter Industries, citing suspected corporate embezzlement. We are forcing an independent audit.”

Evelyn felt a surge of hope, but it was quickly tempered by fear. “Patricia won't take this lying down. She has connections in the local media. She’ll try to destroy my design company, Aura Designs. It’s all I have left of my own work.”

“Let her try,” Nathan said, his voice brimming with absolute confidence. “In fact, we’re going to give her the perfect stage to make her move. Tonight is the annual Metropolitan Business Gala. Patricia and Victor Lang are both on the hosting committee. I want you to walk into that gala with me.”

Evelyn’s eyes widened. “Go there? After what happened last night? It’ll be a media circus.”

Nathan reached across the table, his fingers gently brushing against hers. The warmth of his touch sent a strange, thrilling shiver through her. “They expect you to be hiding, terrified and broken in some corner of the city. Walking in there on my arm sends a message to the entire elite society: you are no longer a victim. You are the rightful heir to the Carter legacy, and you are taking your throne back.”

Evelyn looked into Nathan’s intense blue eyes and felt a profound sense of safety. She nodded. “Let’s do it. Let’s play with fire.”
